Esports at Catena Media

With over 1,200 brands providing content for 5 million readers a week worldwide, managing and growing our search presence is a core function of our business. As a leader in the iGaming industry, it was natural for Catena Media to integrate into the innovative force that is Esports.

Thanks to the expertise of our Esports team, we rapidly became established in the Esports space, and are now hoping to use our knowledge and experience to educate the industry on the considerable opportunities in front of us. As the Esports gaming market expands, we strive to be creative and innovative. Here, we check in with Gianfranco Capozzi, Catena Media’s Head of Esports and Growth, to find out what life is like as an Esports specialist, and discuss projects and insights within the industry.

Catena Media’s Esports department

The Esports department is an avenue for Catena Media’s brands to reach the world of esports & competitive gaming through new media assets, content production, and strategic partnerships.

Esports are a global and multi-disciplinary section within the company, made up of product, commercial, operational, SEO and editorial staff.?

Esports.net and EsportsBets.com are our flagship products, while we also work on a number of new and exciting projects for specific markets & niche audiences.

The Esports Team main projects

The team is working on various multilingual projects, all with the aim of providing the best content and services to our users. The goal is to be where the action is & for this constantly expanding our coverage and publishing new content for our readers.

Our Esports team provides breaking news, gaming guides, esports tournaments coverage, match analysis and predictions on a daily basis. Aside from our main content types, we are also working on new video formats to complement our written content.

We're also extending data use on our sites to provide a better experience for readers and to make it easier for them to discover what they want, and how to access it.?

The Sky's The Limit

When it comes to esports, the sky's the limit. This industry is relatively young, but growing at a very rapid pace, so there is a lot of room for research, development and growth.

The biggest trends right now are in the rise of mobile gaming, the popularity of battle royale games, and the increasing investment in esports by traditional sports teams and organisations, media companies and even celebrities.

The 'beauty' of esports is that it is still a fairly open playing field, which means that there are many opportunities for new organisations and games to get involved and make their mark. Where it is more difficult for new 'sports’ to emerge at a competitive level, in esports new games and leagues are popping up all the time.

In the next few years we will see more traditional sports teams and athletes getting involved in esports, as well as an increase in investment from media companies, large organisations, and non-endemic brands.

Young generations are now growing up with gaming as a part of their everyday life, and esports is providing them with an opportunity to engage with their favourite games on a competitive level. This is something that will continue to grow in popularity, and eventually become even more mainstream, as they provide people with a way to connect with their favourite games and players in a more meaningful way.

The Biggest Challenges in Esports

One of the biggest challenges, though a very exciting one, is the fact that the team is working in a relatively new, rapid-paced and ever-changing industry. This means that there are constantly new changes and opportunities popping up, which can be both exciting and daunting.

Another challenge presents itself due to the fact that esports is a global industry. This means we have to be able to source staff members with the right skill sets and language capabilities from all around the world.

Finding the right talent in a young industry is not always easy, but we think it's important to have a mix of people from different backgrounds in order to get the most out of a team.?

Key Qualities for an Esports specialist?

To work in this industry, it’s essential to be passionate. A genuine love for gaming, esports and all things digital will help you considerably in your journey.

Creative?

Constantly producing content and engaging with users requires a significant element of creativity. For example, finding new ways to communicate is key.
