Espada - the ugly Madeiran fish that tastes delightful!
The Black Scabbard lives between 600 and 1,600 metres below sea level. Considered a great achievement due to the incredible depths to which the fish swims. The theory is that the fish rise to the level of 600 metres below sea level when it is dark and then descend a couple of a hundreds metres further below when it is light. Which is why it's easier to catch the Black Scabbard at night .Black Scabbard was considered unique to Madeira. Although the same fish is said to be found in Ireland, and even Japan, . The fish has been caught successfully for some years off the shores of North Africa, Portugal, and even the Canary Islands.
Don't be fooled by it's scary image, Espada fish is the tastiest fish I know and the best way to eat the it is with Passion fruit and Banana, with Fried Maize a true Madeiran Delicacy that will make your mouth water.

8 年Carla, What a wonderful post. I also love the name The Black Scabbard. No doubt its best friend is the swordfish!
