Overview

Recently, I managed to get hold of the ESP32-S3-BOX-3. This device is a fully open-source AIoT development kit which is based on the powerful ESP32-S3 AI SoC. Unlike other development board out there, this one is quite unique as it is designed o revolutionize the field of traditional development boards. Now lets see what is inside the box. Display Module

The ESP32-S3-BOX-3 comes with a 2.4-inch (320 x 240) SPI touch screen, two digital microphones, a speaker, a Type-C port, and a high-density PCIe connector which allows for hardware extensibility. The image below shows the LCD and other peripheral as well.

Next lets look at each of the different type of accessories that comes with the development kit.

ESP32-S3-BOX-3-SENSOR

The ESP32-S3-BOX-3-SENSOR is a versatile accessory equipped with an integrated temperature and humidity sensor, IR emitter and receiver, radar sensor, 18650 rechargeable battery slot, and MicroSD card slot. It enables users to effortlessly develop a variety of innovative projects. Users can integrate multiple sensors for detection and control, utilize the rechargeable battery for enhanced portability, and expand storage by up to 32 GB with the MicroSD card slot.


ESP32-S3-BOX-3-DOCK

The ESP32-S3-BOX-3-DOCK is designed to act as a stand for the ESP32-S3-BOX-3 via gold finger connectors, providing extensive expandability. It features two Pmod?-compatible headers, enabling users to connect additional peripheral modules. These headers offer 16 programmable GPIOs and supply 3.3 V power to peripherals. The dock also includes a USB Type-A port for connecting various USB devices, such as a USB camera (supporting up to 720p resolution), USB drives, and HID devices. Additionally, a USB Type-C port is available solely for 5 V power input.


ESP32-S3-BOX-3-BRACKET

The ESP32-S3-BOX-3-BRACKET allows the ESP32-S3-BOX-3 to be mounted onto other devices, creating new possibilities for transforming non-smart devices into smart ones. Installation is simple—just prepare two mounting holes and a slot using the provided template. By utilizing its two Pmod?-compatible headers, users can seamlessly integrate wireless connectivity, voice control, and screen control features. The ESP32-S3-BOX-3-BRACKET adapter helps unlock the full potential of non-smart devices.


ESP32-S3-BOX-3-BREAD


The ESP32-S3-BOX-3-BREAD is an adapter designed to easily connect the ESP32-S3-BOX-3 to a standard breadboard, offering convenience for makers who enjoy hands-on projects and want to expand and interface with other devices. It features a high-density PCIe connector and two rows of 2.54 mm pitch pins, exposing 16 programmable GPIOs from the ESP32-S3. This makes the ESP32-S3-BOX-3-BREAD a highly practical and functional tool for prototyping and development.


First Power-on

For powering up for the first time, i am using the sensor bracket. Once the cable is plugged in, the screen will light up and the Espressif window load up. Below is the video taken while powering up the device for the first time.
