[ESN] People NOT buying into your safety vision? Try this...

This might be difficult for some people to understand...

No one is going to buy into your safety initiative until they buy into you.

Yup...

It's true.

But what does that really mean?

It means when you say "but we got all the Arc Flash Labels on"...

Nobody cares.

"But I made a new energized work procedure."

Nobody cares.

"But I got these new fancy flashing light things that flash and make people safe"...

Nobody cares.

Truth is, nobody cares about all that stuff, or what you have done.

All they really want is to know that you care about them.

Sure... people want to be safe, but you really can't get an entire organization behind what you want to do until you get them to buy into YOU as the right person to lead them where they need to go.

I've seen it too many times.

You can have all your ducks in a row... but nothing happens.

So, what do you need to do?

It's not easy... and it takes time.

But you've got to start somewhere.

So here's a few things you can focus on...

--

Develop Relationships:

Building strong relationships with team members is crucial.

For example, you can regularly engage with employees through informal check-ins and team-building activities.

When team members feel valued and understood, they are more likely to embrace your safety vision and work collaboratively to achieve it.

Be Honest and Authentic:

Being honest and authentic in all communications, fosters an environment of trust.

If you openly discuss safety challenges and share personal experiences related to safety, employees are more likely to see the genuine concern behind your safety vision.

For instance, you could share a story about a near-miss incident you experienced...

This shows you're a real person and your transparency helps employees connect with the safety message on a personal level.

Give People the Proper Tools:

Providing the necessary tools and resources is essential for enabling safe work practices.

Don't start spewing safety knowledge and telling everyone how great it's going to be if they don't have access to the tools they will need to actually get the job done safely!

Hold Everyone to a High Standard:

Holding everyone to a high standard reinforces the importance of safety and creates a culture of accountability.

For example, implementing a system of regular safety audits and recognizing individuals who adhere to safety standards can motivate the entire team to prioritize safety.

By setting and maintaining high standards, you demonstrate that safety is a non-negotiable aspect of the workplace.

Well, that's all for now.

Start giving some of this a try, and remember, it's not about the policies, procedures and standards...

It's about people and your ability to have them buy-in to you as their safety leader.
