British retailers have said that incoming UK Prime Minister Liz Truss will 'need to demonstrate strong leadership as the cost-of-living crisis deepens', following her appointment as the new Conservative Party leader yesterday. In a statement, Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, congratulated Truss on her appointment, adding that the retail industry is "ready to work with the new government to shore up consumer confidence and help deliver economic growth". She added that businesses are eager for clarity on the government's intentions "as soon as possible", so that they can understand the inflationary impact of policy decisions.
Carrefour is to sell Spanish consumers a basket of 30 basic goods for €30, the company has announced, days after Spain announced it was considering asking major retailers to offer special price packages to mitigate inflation. The government's announcement was met with criticism by Spanish business groups and some politicians, who view the move as the government engaging in price intervention.
2 Sisters Food Group founder, Ranjit Singh Boparan, has warned that this year’s CO2 crisis has now intensified from a producer shut down issue to a "wider price shock" for consumers and CO2 users. The statement follows the announcement of a price hike of up to 20 times the current rate by a key CO2 supplier. According to Boparan, this decision by a major UK supplier will ultimately compound the food inflation environment for shoppers and his businesses will have no choice but to swallow the increases.
Austrian supermarket chain Billa has launched a new store concept that focuses only on plant-based products, boasting over 2,500 SKUs. The move comes as the popularity of plant-based foods continues to rise in Austria, the retailer noted. A recent survey commissioned by Billa, which is a subsidiary of the REWE Group, unveiled that 46% of Austrians have consciously reduced their consumption of animal products, including meat, in recent years. Offering a purely plant-based assortment, it claims to be the first of its kind in Austria.
Belgium's Colruyt Group has reduced water consumption at three sites in Halle by approximately 8,000 cubic metres with the help of its water treatment plant at the distribution centre in Dassenveld. At the end of 2021, the retail group started using the water treatment plant, which purifies industrial and sanitary waste water for its distribution centre in Dassenveld, head office in Wilgenveld, and the offices and warehouses at the Elbeek site in Belgium. Designed with a production capacity of 11 cubic metres drinking water per hour, the installation can purify 90,000 cubic metres of waste water into 81,000 cubic metres of so called 'process water' annually.

A third (34%) of UK consumers do not know what the traffic light front-of-pack nutritional labelling system means, despite 76% saying they look at the system when choosing something to eat, new research from Nestlé Cereals has unveiled. One in ten (11%) said they were not even aware of its existence, when asked if they knew what the front-of-pack nutritional traffic light labelling system means. For those aware of the system, there remains significant misunderstanding around what the colours in the system actually mean, the study noted.
