Whatever one might say about the effectiveness of political governance in the US today, marketers have a lot to learn about the way politicians do marketing. You don't see politicians jumping on the latest bright shiny objects in marketing such as AI. They are succeeding by doing it the old-fashioned way: identifying and building relationships with the people most likely to vote.
How does it help shareholders for organizations to make political contributions destined to annoy a large swath of stakeholders and shareholders? Ironically, shareholder capitalists have a long tradition of contributing to politicians whose interests are not necessarily aligned with those of many shareholders and stakeholders.
In the recently issued study, “Sustainable Investing, Evidence From the Field,” “Fund mandates, firmwide policies, or client wishes caused 71% to make stock selection, voting, or engagement decisions that they would otherwise not have. Some of these actions had financial consequences, such as avoiding stocks that would improve returns or diversification; others had ES (environmental/social) consequences, such as avoiding stocks whose ES performance they could have improved.”
