ESG & Sustainability: BP cutting its renewables budget

ESG & Sustainability: BP cutting its renewables budget

Going against the tide

The hot topic today is BP’s recent announcement that it's cutting back on green investments to focus more on old-school oil and gas production.

That’s surprising! I thought they would remain committed to the green transition. They are not alone, however. Equinor and Shell have been scaling back on green investments also. Their move is a major step back even though ESG & Sustainability is still gathering momentum. I don't know how soon, but I'm sure they will get back on track.

Needless to say, BP's actions raises numerous questions about its long-term strategy.

As The Global Law Firm advises clients in Energy Law, it’s important to understand the implications for them. But it’s also important for the firm, as a business, to consider how this impacts its own strategy. Should it align more with clients who are focusing solely on ESG & sustainability?

[Maria purrs and stretches]

Shifting focus away from eco-friendly ventures, could affect investments in sustainable projects. Clients are likely to reconsider their strategies. This might also mean more business from traditional energy clients who want legal support for expanding their operations.

On the other hand, there also a risk of losing clients who are serious about sustainability. ?They might not want to associate with companies that aren’t prioritizing green initiatives. Clients in renewable energy may look elsewhere if they feel companies aren’t committed to climate goals.?That’s something to be concerned about.

[Maria stretches and yawns]

Navigating potential regulatory shifts

There could also be regulatory implications. You see, if traditional companies start prioritizing fossil fuels again, governments may introduce stricter regulations to meet climate commitment - or relax them to support companies like Shell, Equinor and BP. Companies might need more guidance on navigating changes in environmental law

Things may get contentious.

The Global Law Firm should also take public sentiments into account. There could also be legal challenges from climate action campaigners/environmental groups, for example Greenpeace, Friends of The Earth, Leah Namugerwa, Ella and Caitlin McEwan, Holly Gillibran and Greta Thunberg, if they think BP is reneging on its climate commitments. This looks promising for the Law Firm’s litigation team.

[Maria moves closer as I pet her]

It’s vital, therefore, that the Corporate Law team starts preparing clients for potential changes in regulation. Clients may need Legal Advice on how to navigate any government pressure or lawsuits that emerges on account of this decision.

[Maria hops onto another desk nearby, catching my attention again]

Further, the Global Law Firm may need to balance its portfolio. For example, it may decide to work with all types of corporate clients while maintaining its advocacy for sustainable practices where possible.

Staying ahead of these trends!

The firm might as well start drafting some insights on how clients can adapt now before things, erm, heat up

[Maria gives me an approving nudge]
