ESG Insider: Women in Leadership — the long road to gender parity

Diversity in leadership has received rising attention in recent years from stakeholders in the sustainability world. Investors have pushed for diversity on company boards and management teams, and in some parts of the world, that push has been reflected in new laws and regulations. But the number of women in top roles remains low.

Out of more than 5,400 companies assessed in the latest S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment, only 4.4% had a woman CEO, according to a?new analysis?published for International Women’s Day. The data also shows that the number of women in management has ticked up only slowly since the COVID-19 pandemic, something that could restrain the pool of future women CEO candidates. Few companies offer employee support programs such as childcare facilities or paid parental leave beyond legal minimums, factors that could impact women’s career development, according to the S&P Global analysis.

To mark International Women’s Day on March 8 and Women’s History Month in March, we’re also bringing you a special series of the?ESG Insider podcast?focused on women in leadership. We’ll be speaking to women CEOs and executives from across industries and around the globe over the coming weeks.
