The only remaining coal-fired power plant in the UK closed on Sept. 30, making the UK the first G7 country to eliminate coal generation and the fifth European country to do so.
German power producer Uniper SE said it is planning on converting the now closed 2-GW Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal power plant to a low-carbon hydrogen production plant. The closure is a milestone for the UK’s decarbonization ambitions. The country aims to achieve a net-zero emissions power system by 2030, which would require doubling its onshore wind, nearly tripling its solar power and nearly quadrupling its offshore wind generation, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights.
