ESG Insider: EU reaches deal on higher renewables target

The European Parliament and the Council of the EU, made up of government ministers of the 27 EU member states, reached a deal on March 30 to raise the bloc’s renewable energy target for 2030 as it seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut its reliance on fossil fuel imports.

Under the provisional agreement, the EU aims to raise the binding renewable target for 2030 to a minimum of 42.5%, up from the current 32% target. That would almost double the current share of renewable energy in the bloc, the European Commission said.

The deal is part of a far-reaching climate plan announced by the European Commission in July 2021 designed to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030.

In this week's newsletter, we explore the latest sustainability-related regulatory developments in our monthly update, which includes news on Japan’s green policy roadmap, EU green bond standard, Canada’s sustainable jobs plan and more.

We also examine how an offshore wind farm project in Germany offers a blueprint for subsidy-free offshore wind and how China’s power companies are tackling the challenge of including more renewables in domestic energy consumption. We also look at how inflation in the UK could reverse a trend of falling prices in the country’s renewables industry.

In this week's episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we bring you the final episode in our Women in Leadership series. We talk to Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission, Alethia Jackson, Senior Vice President for ESG and Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer for the US at Walgreens Boots Alliance, and Jessica Economos, Vice President for Global Diversity Equity & Inclusion at Wolters Kluwer, a Dutch information, software solutions and services company.
