(ES+EN) From Pursuing Growth to Demanding Profitability - The Evolution of VCs

(English version translated from Spanish by ChatGPT)

Times have changed in the world of venture capital investment. Venture capitalists (VCs) are adopting a new mindset that moves away from the traditional mantra of "grow at all costs" and focuses more on financial sustainability and short-term profitability.

The Trend Frenzy and Blind Investments

One of the most evident phenomena in the world of venture capital investment is the trend of VCs to follow fads. When a topic becomes trendy, such as cybersecurity in 2017, cryptocurrencies in 2021, or artificial intelligence (AI) today, VCs often rush to invest in startups related to that topic. This can lead to market saturation and overvaluation of companies as everyone competes for a piece of the pie.

The problem with this trend-following mentality is that it often lacks proper due diligence, resulting in rushed investments and a lack of consideration for business fundamentals.

An illustrative example of this issue is the case of FTX, the cryptocurrency platform that managed to raise approximately $900 million in a 2021 financing round led by Paradigm and backed by prominent investors such as Sequoia Capital, SoftBank, and Ribbit Capital, among others. The investment decision seemed to be largely driven by the participation of renowned VCs, rather than a thorough evaluation of regulatory compliance and other essential aspects of FTX's business. Today, Sam Bankman-Fried is in jail, having caused the biggest scandal in crypto.

The New Profitability Mindset

The question many VCs are now asking themselves is whether the frantic pursuit of growth at all costs is truly sustainable in the long run. The answer seems to be increasingly negative. A clear example of expansion that drowned the business, along with less-than-pious lies to investors, is the case of Adam Neumann's WeWork.

Overfunding startups and focusing on growth at any cost can lead to unsustainable business practices, unrestrained cash burn that shifts the focus away from the product and its profitability, and instead emphasizes investor appeasement and expansion.

Economic instability and global events such as COVID-19 have been major catalysts for entrepreneurs and VCs to change their mindset, seeking and demanding business models that demonstrate a clear path to profitability from the outset.

This new mindset makes sense when we look at the holistic picture.

Holistic Sustainability

The trend toward profitability from the outset aligns with the growing awareness of sustainability.

Just as the sustainability movement seeks to reduce waste and minimize environmental impact, the new mindset of VCs aims to avoid cash burn and support companies with solid fundamentals.

In this context, the act of throwing money at startups that lack a solid business foundation can be likened to generating unnecessary waste. Similarly, just as the rise of "eco-fashion" is putting an end to the "fast fashion" industry, VCs are beginning to move away from the "fast investment" mentality in favor of more thoughtful investments and supporting companies with sustainable models.

Sustainability here doesn't just revolve around our ecosystem (which is becoming increasingly fragile and opens a host of questions about the future of our human species) but also the sustainability of profits. I agree with your assessment of crypto and AI in recent years. The technology is new and exciting but we haven't quite figured out what the future of any of it will be. However, any technology that improves the sustainability of our human species will continue to be ever-present in our lives. It's a fascinating intersection, the sustainability of our ecosystems and profits. Fantastic insights, Daniela Malqui. Thanks for sharing!

Sustainability is hyper critical as we move forward. My partner and I just launched T36 Golf. Our unique double loop design reduces the water consumption by up to 50% from the traditionally designed 18-hole golf courses. Sustainability is one our differentiators and the potential investor groups that we are in negotiations with love this element of the business.
