Escaping the Script: Finding Your Authentic Path
Many professionals find themselves living lives dictated by external expectations rather than their authentic desires, leading to burnout and disconnection. Through the case study of Ted, a professional seeking fundamental life change, this article explores:
Idea in Brief
Key Insight: Authentic living begins when we break free from societal scripts and reconnect with our core values.
The Wake-Up Call
We've been on a coaching journey together for a year and a half, progressing from milestone to milestone. The first time we met Ted was during a leadership workshop, where Sina, the organizer, invited participants to connect with their true selves. We partnered to help the attendees progress in their personal growth journeys. Ted openly shared his experiences and his deep desire for fundamental life change. A few weeks later, we were already crafting his escape plan to leave his current job. This was three years after the COVID-19 outbreak in China, amidst a wave of people leaving their jobs in search of something more meaningful.
When Ted first reached out for coaching, the signs of disconnection from his authentic self were clear and troubling:
The Hidden Script
Like many Chinese of his generation, and those before him, he wasn't living a life true to himself. Instead, he was conforming to a system that tightly controlled every aspect of his life. From birth to death, his parents had all planned for him: his education, the income required to buy a house, the type of family he should raise, and his retirement savings. His work, family life, personal habits, leisure activities, and even his hobbies were all dictated by external expectations.
While belonging to a tribe provides security, complete conformity can suppress our authentic selves.
For survival, human nature drives us to seek a tribe for security and safety. This is the origin of our sense of belonging and quest for approval. As we grow, our understanding of the world expands, and the tribes around us—family, friends, workplaces, and communities—shape our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. Belonging to a tribe provides the foundational security to take risks, build self-esteem, and expand our influence. While this is essential, it can sometimes prevent our true inner selves from reaching their full potential.
In working with Ted, we discovered that breaking free from this tribal conformity requires understanding three fundamental elements that shape our authentic selves. These pillars form the foundation of who we truly are, beyond the expectations and scripts handed to us by society.
The Three Pillars of Authentic Living
1. Values: Our Core Compass
Values represent what we hold most dear, like a messenger safeguarding the king's letter on a journey. They define our reason for existence. Ignoring these core values leads to an invaluable life—one marked by disconnection and dissonance.

2. Beliefs: Our Inner Voice
Our beliefs, shaped by our intrinsic values, serve as the inner voice guiding our decisions. They determine how we interpret and respond to the world around us.
3. Paradigms: Our Worldview Lens
Paradigms are the lenses through which we interpret the world, molded by our beliefs. Think of it like music: our values are the "play" button that initiates action, our beliefs are the sounds produced that express those values, and our paradigms determine how we experience and interpret that music in our lives.
Most of us remain stuck not because we don't know what to do, but because we lack the energy to do it. This energy comes from alignment with our authentic selves.
Your Path to Authenticity: Essential Questions
To begin your journey toward authentic living, reflect on these fundamental questions:

Whether you're contemplating a career change or seeking greater fulfillment in your current path, these questions will serve as guideposts for aligning your life with your authentic self.
