Escaping the Darkness
Matthew Gray, CFP?
Avid disc golfer, forensics nerd (not about dead bodies) and hockey fan. I'm a financial planner because I'm too small and slow to play pro football.
The room was dark as I stared into the black space of my closet door. It was difficult to make out in the haze what was mere inches from my face...
Before I go further, relax! This isn’t a Halloween horror tale!?
I was simply getting up early this morning and trying to pick out clothes to wear.?
As I yawned and tried to shake the cobwebs from my mind, I reached in and pulled out what I thought was my blue dress shirt. I had already started fastening the buttons before I realized I had mistakenly grabbed a green shirt instead.?
Since I had cut my prep time close by hitting snooze one too many times, I hastily unbuttoned the wrong shirt and grabbed the true blue one.?
Next, I hurriedly snagged my khaki slacks from the closet (yes, I still wear that color and I appreciate your lack of judgment in my style choices).
I went to the bathroom mirror to put on my tie and as I flipped on the light I realized I had put on the wrong color pants as well!
Backtracking once again, I changed them out for the actual khaki slacks.?
While I finished getting ready, I reflected on the mishap.
If I had taken five extra seconds and turned on a light my morning ritual would have been a few minutes shorter.
You know I want those two extra minutes of sleep!
It reminded me of how often this can happen in so many areas of life.?
I may try the shortcut here and there to save a few seconds or pennies but the gamble can often end up costing dollars and hours.?
For instance, I’m not a handyman, far from it!
Last week, the toilet in our Airbnb got clogged. I attempted to fix it and spent 10 minutes fiddling with the plunger to no avail.?
In desperation, I turned to YouTube (the modern day encyclopedia) for help. In 30 seconds, I found and watched a short video where a plumber demonstrated a simple technique. On the first try, I succeeded!?
We often cannot see the full picture.
Lack of knowledge, short supply of time, or simply an incomplete perspective can keep us from conquering life’s problems that come our way.?
What I’m realizing is my shortcuts often lead to longer, less desirable results.
Instead, I’m deciding to take the time to turn on the light, ask questions, and seek help to navigate the unknown.?
