I love correlating laws and formulas in math / physics to recruitment. And it never fails to surprise me!! .... The concept of "escape velocity" always fascinated me as a high school kid .
Just to refresh our memories .... Escape velocity is the minimum speed needed for an object to "break free" from the gravitational attraction of a massive body, so the object will move away forever from the massive body, without additional acceleration applied to the object.
Drawing back to recruitment from school physics … A good recruiting strategy that every recruiter should implement in order to find and keep top talent is a passive strategy. Passive recruiting means courting potential candidates who are not currently looking for a job. It’s easy for us to garner that courting potential candidates who are not looking for a job is not an easy affair and the whole approach or game changes. It has to be a light marketing approach as against the conventional heavy operations approach taken by talent acquisition professionals.
Every passive candidate has an escape velocity attached ; applying the principle of escape velocity in recruitment “ the escape velocity is the minimum effort/speed/propensity needed for a candidate to “break free” from her present organization” so that the candidate will move away forever from the present organization . Now lets have a closer look at the formula
v_e = \sqrt{\frac{2GM}{r}}
The factors determining the escape velocity of an object are the
- Radius {r} of the planet which can be compared to the notice period of the potential passive talent in the market. The higher the notice period the greater should be the escape velocity or the escape effort to be put in by the acquiring organization.
- Gravitational constant {G} which in recruitment terms would be the pull factor of her present organization or her manager.
- Mass {m} or her equity / compensation in her present organization.
So lets me mindful of this simple formula while passive recruiting ...Happy passive recruiting !!
