In August 1949, the Mann Gulch fire raged through Montana's Helena National Forest. Amidst the chaos, Wagner Dodge, a United States Forest Service smokejumper, found himself in a dire situation. As the fire rapidly advanced, Dodge made a critical decision to break away from the predetermined escape route. With determination, he led his crew uphill, seeking safety on an open ridge.
As the flames closed in, Dodge knew they couldn't outrun the fire. He then did a strange thing. He took a matchbox and set a fire from an opposite direction towards the upcoming fire. His teammates feel that he has gone crazy.? He ordered his crew to drop their gear, run fast, and take cover behind rock formations, providing temporary shelter. But only a few believed him, as the escape fire that contains the spread of the blaze of out of syllabus for what they team in fire fighting course.?
Miraculously, Dodge’s innovation worked. Those who believed in him endured the intense heat and smoke, their faith in the innovative escape system keeping them going. Dodge's quick thinking and the effectiveness of escape fire had saved their lives, marking a turning point in fire safety and inspiring advancements in firefighting techniques and equipment. Unfortunately, the others perished, mostly they could not outrun the fire with the heavy gear that they could not shed.
The Mann Gulch fire was a tragic event, but the story of Wagner Dodge and the escape fire became a testament to courage and ingenuity.?

The moral of the story is the ability to change quickly could be a matter of life and death. Innovation happens in compelling situations. Many a time shedding off your baggage will make you progress fast.
PS: After decades scientists realized that forest fires are actually good for the ecosystem. Forest fires destroy the weeds and let the Sun's rays penetrate the earth for fresh life to happen. The moral of this story is not all disasters are bad, some of them shape our destiny.
