I recently had a great conversation with Brian Herriot, the mastermind behind Choosy Consultant, about this very topic.

Brian’s story and insights of leaving behind the corporate grind and going out on his own holds some key lessons around work, life and financial freedom that you won’t want to miss.

Brian has an intriguing backstory, starting his corporate life as an engineer and working his way up in big name consulting firms.

Despite a successful career, Brian hit a turning point around age 40. Seeing Marissa Mayer, a peer from Wisconsin, become CEO of Yahoo! made him question his own career choices.?

He realized he wanted more than just a corporate job – he wanted financial and time freedom.

Brian took the leap into entrepreneurship, starting as an independent consultant.?

This move allowed him to control his time and income, leading to financial freedom by age 47.?

He now splits his time between California and a lakeside cabin in Wisconsin, working during the school year and enjoying summers with his family.

The Birth of Choosy Consultant

Brian’s success drew attention, and people began asking him how he achieved such freedom.?

Time Freedom Equation: Brian developed the Time Freedom Equation, which balances your lifestyle expenses with investment income and additional work income. This model helps clients see that financial freedom is achievable sooner than they think.

Investment Over Savings: Traditional financial advice often focuses on building a large savings mountain. Brian emphasizes the importance of cash flow over sheer savings. By combining investment income with manageable work income, you can achieve financial freedom without waiting decades.

Fear Setting: Inspired by Tim Ferriss, Brian encourages clients to identify their worst-case scenarios, plan preventative measures, and devise recovery strategies. This exercise helps alleviate fear and uncertainty about leaving a stable job.
