E+R=O


My friend Dave Snyder was an avid reader and content junkie when it came to topics like leadership and self-improvement. I’m sure he consumed Jack Canfield content; The formula is often found in personal development and business self-help books, and was first written in Jack Canfield's First Secrets to Success.


Dave’s recent unexpected passing at only 54 years of age has startled and shaken the community. He was a popular coach and teacher at the local high school, and a friend and colleague of mine for over 20 years. This formula, with due respect to Mr. Canfield, has become “Dave’s formula” to success for those that knew him. It was ubiquitous for his football and track programs, and in the week since his passing, has been mentioned at vigils and on social media as one of his legacies among many.


E+R=O may not be as significant as E=MC2, but when it comes to being resilient, mentally tough, and a savvy leader, it’s a great start.


E stands for Event; R stands for Response; O stands for outcome.


It's a mental model that can be used to help people understand how their reactions to events can shape their outcomes, whether positive or negative.


Let’s start with my golf game. The event is I hit my ball into the water. The response can be one of two things that will form the outcome. I can either stay mad (because that will be the first reaction) which likely will make the outcome of the next shot poor; or I can take a breath, accept the result, stay positive, and move forward boldly. While it doesn’t guarantee a good next shot, it will guarantee my experience is better.


How about business? There are a multitude of events both good and bad: a cyber attack, a product recall, a lost major client, a key employee leaving, a damaging post on social media, to name a few of the negatives. We also have positive events: a sale won, a promotion, an award for excellence, a new hire, and a new business started.


In our lives, events will range from the death of a loved one to a grand reunion with an old friend; from a job not offered to a new exciting opportunity; and from a serious health concern or injury to a rapid recovery.


We will experience events every day. Most of them are small and seemingly insignificant (like responsive to a text or email). Others like those listed above will feel more momentous.


Dave would implore us that the event is most often out of our control and in the past; what comes next is solely up to us. Our response will shape what comes next and that response can also have a wide range of emotions and actions.


Take it from me, a guy who throughout his life has responded emotionally too many times, the best responses to any event are made by being patient, kind (especially to yourself), thoughtful, and with confidence.?


My guess is that the countless students and most of the adults who heard Dave expound E+R=O will give credit to him for helping them live and lead a better life. I’m sure that’s exactly the outcome Mr. Canfield wanted when he shared it. I know that in my own life, it will be a good reminder the next time an event challenges me. My hope is that it will do the same for you.
