-    IRS Tax Tip 2021-07

Are you scratching your head over this one a little?

Most likely because you’ve never needed one, and don’t understand why this is a thing?

I get it.

I first heard of this the year I ran a commercial tax-prep franchise office.

The deal was that if a taxpayer experienced identity theft as a result of filing a return the IRS had a PIN protection program.

As a tax preparer if we had a PIN client we needed to get that PIN number from them to submit the return.

Well…this year, with the tax tip bulletin above the IRS has now made the program voluntary for anyone that wants to participate.

A couple of things to know:

You get a new PIN every year. Also, once you’re in, you’re in, though they say they’re working on an opt-out option.

They mail it to you. Remember, and this is huge.

The real IRS will NEVER call you on the phone for your information.

(Neither does the SSA. These calls are ruthless scammers).

So!

If you’re interested I shared the link to check it out. Read the page before proceeding, and make sure it’s right for you.

You’ll have to have your new number every year, to share with ONLY your trusted tax guy, but…

It’s an extra layer of protection that they’ve opened up for everybody.

Just thought you should know ??
