Ergatta Offline: Luca Auriemma on unplugging and getting outside

For our latest installment of “Ergatta Offline,” we caught up with Luca Auriemma, our Director of Talent Management & People Operations. As a lover of all things nature and someone who spends the majority of his free time exploring the outdoors, Luca shared with us his thoughts on getting away from the screen, and the benefits of fully unplugging.

How has taking time to fully unplug and get off the grid impacted your work-life?

Oh, unplugging is a necessity for me. I love New York, but I also love getting away from it. Lately, unplugging for me has consisted of escaping upstate for a few days every month or so. Upstate meaning the Catskills, the Adirondacks, etc. - quiet, beautiful places.

Two weekends ago, I watched the sunset three days in a row over forest covered mountains with a field of wildflowers in the forefront. It may sound simple, but it's incredibly grounding. Having the time and space for frequent, small getaways like these does wonders for my work/life balance and I'm stoked to have the flexibility to make them happen!

What are some of the personal benefits you've seen as a result of these trips?

Sanity! Everyone needs to take time away from work, personal projects, hobbies, whatever it may be from time to time. Doing so allows a reset and allows one - or at least me - to return to those things with more energy and drive. Too much of one thing makes me feel incredibly off balance, so allowing time and space to recalibrate in a quiet place immersed in nature does wonders for me. The quiet quiets my mind, and I return to my regular life more present than when I left it.
