The shock and awe of proclaiming “Great Resignation” is?no longer there as we are several years into accepting this jargon into our everyday. Here at SkillGigs, we want to announce a new notion, with a positive spin: that we are in an era of many “greats.” That this is the era of opportunity for change and exploration, for everyone. Since the first time that the term "Great Resignation" debuted in headlines, it is interesting that the focus has been primarily on what it is and the strain of it. Companies and researchers have been discussing it for 2+ years, but as of March of 2022, we saw record highs in job openings and employee turnover.
It is time to change.?
The Great Acceleration?
Talent shortages, especially in skilled areas like tech and healthcare, were already a concern before the global pandemic. With tech advancing exponentially, the skills needed to match and support digital transformation have kept many CEOs up at night — for years. And for our healthcare folks, the aging baby boomer population already had a prediction of inadequate staffing supplies hitting us by 2030. ?
And then BOOM. The world stopped. Companies had to take their 5-year digital transformation plans and put them in hyperdrive to survive. And we all saw what healthcare has been going through....?
COVID created a vacuum for acceleration. Acceleration for change; change in productivity, change in products, change in services, change in equality (pay, race, human rights), and change in how businesses fundamentally operate. Companies that moved quickly have come out on the other side more agile, successful, and open to what is next. We also see many tech-specific employers managing significant layoffs, some of which could contribute to the initial panic of not moving fast enough during a crisis. At a minimum, we propose that we shift to the Great Acceleration instead of using "Great Resignation" to explain current hiring climates. It changes the narrative to choices made to the overall energy we see in both job seeker and hiring manager. It is time to change as staffing shortages will continue to accelerate. The Great Reinvention?
If the Great Acceleration is where we change the narrative to new energies, then the Great Reinvention speaks to the potential of choices that are still to come.
