Equity: healthy economy, healthy people

The Inefficiency of Inequality, a recent report from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), illustrates how inequality is economically inefficient and is an impediment to growth, development and sustainability, including achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Not only do pro-equality policies have a positive impact on social well-being, they also help create an economic system that is more propitious for learning, innovation and higher productivity.”

A more inclusive society is a healthier society. To tackle inequality means to tackle the culture of privilege as it manifests itself in society, governance and institutions – at both national and global levels.

While the report focuses on the Latin America and the Caribbean region, the insights are universal and highlight the importance of addressing broader economic policies to promote human and environmental health.
