EQUIP YOUR TEAM WITH THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED
It should be no surprise that to scale your business you will need a team to support you. Look at all of the greatest businesses of all time; Apple, Google, Amazon... they are all comprised of huge teams that operate like clockwork to achieve their goal.
In contrast, why is it that so many small businesses struggle with staff? Why do so many business owners complain that their staff are not motivated, don't do what is expected of them or don't pull their weight?
The truth is that your team probably doesn't have the tools they need to be successful.
There are a few simple tools that can drive high performance. These same tools we use in our own business, with our clients and have taken businesses on the verge of implosion to growing and thriving.
1. Set clear role descriptions and expectations
Most small businesses fail to do this because they feel that the role is too varied to be clearly defined. Your staff end up becoming a Jack of all trades and a master of none meaning that high performance work can't be done. Although they might have a varied and dynamic role, get clear on the primary duties and outcomes that are expected so you can measure them by this
2. Define KPIs and metrics
Too many businesses fly completely blind (refer to my last post). Some simple KPIs such as leads, new client appointments, proposals, new client value $, monthly revenue banked can help you understand where things might be going astray, help you get your team invested in the businesses performance and help them drive the business forward.
3. Weekly meetings
Your team need face time with you and your business needs communication to thrive. Having a regular team meeting to discuss what went well last week, what are the goals for this week, celebrate wins and overcome challenges is game changing once implemented.
4. Weekly self-assessments
Have your staff complete a weekly survey around how their week went. Ask things like; what are you proud of, what could you do better, who was an outstanding performer, what were your targets and did you achieve them. Since implementing this in our business, our team have provided a total of over 1,000 responses providing invaluable feedback for us to improve the business
5. Regular coaching
Your staff want to learn, want new responsibilities and want to see themselves progress. Human beings are like a tree; they are either growing and thriving or rotting and dying. Invest time in them to review the self-assessments, identify areas for development and help them push forward.
Seems like a lot to do right? This is why as a business owner you cannot keep a foot in all camps of your business. Your business will grow once you transition from a technician to a manager, from a manager to a leader and hopefully one day, from a leader to an entrepreneur.
The reality is that the above can be done in around 4 hours a week.
