Equality VS Justice
A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS
What I see in this picture is an image of our educational system. There is a whole world of education, experience and adventure that all children and youth in Oregon want to envision and dream about. They all stand on the precipice of opportunity hoping to see the next step in their educational evolution. Students in poverty and those from diverse cultures come to school each day and stand on the same building blocks that are constructed for those that have privilege, ability and economic family supports. Many bring their day to day realities of being exposed to family systems that suffer illness with no medical care, mental disorders that go untreated, domestic violence, substance abuse and extreme poverty.
In addition, immigrants, refugees, migrants and dual language learners are exposed to a daily environment where they feel socially isolated and unable to learn. Yet, they all stand on the same educational blocks that were constructed a long time ago before many different cultures made their home in Oregon.
