I facilitated a training with youth who are preparing for college.
We discussed how procrastination shows up and hinders their potential.
After I took them through the process of identifying their top two basic needs, we dived into how to meet those needs through the self-coaching model.
I asked for volunteers who are willing to come share an issue.
"When you have an issue, oftentimes the circumstance doesn't change however there is one element you can change in the model in order to get the results you seek." I said. "Now give me a real life circumstance and your results so we can follow the process."
The student explained that they had to apply for college and kept procrastinating.
So I took them through the self-coaching model.
Circumstance.
What happened? The student needed to apply for college however they kept pushing it off.
Thoughts.
What did you think about? The student thought it's a waste of time to go to college however this was the only way they could further their career. A necessary evil if you will.
Feelings.
How did you feel? The student felt anxious and overwhelmed.
Actions.
What did you do after you felt that feeling? The student avoided the task.

Results.
Do you like these results? No. Months passed and they still had not applied to college so they began to spiral and feel more anxiety and overwhelm.
I explained the AWESOME part about this model is all they have to change is what they think and the results will change for them.
So I asked, "what can you think differently about this in order to get different results?"
"Well, I could change my thought to how much I love to learn so applying to college will help me continue my learning path." They said.
"Okay! Now that you've changed the thought, how does that make you feel?" I asked.
"Honestly, I am excited. I look forward to applying once this session is done!" They said with a new found sense of hope and pride.
"Awesome! Now who's next?" I asked excitedly.
Needless to say, I had others raising their hand to go through the process and it was a huge success.
If we would help our students practice self-coaching, we could minimize the time, energy and money we waste on trying to 'motivate' them into doing things they do not want to do.
