EPS - Expandable Polystyrene
Expandable polystyrene is a kind of polystyrene product with foaming agent. Abbreviated code "EPS". The appearance is colorless and transparent bead particles. Common foaming agents are low boiling hydrocarbons (such as petroleum ether, butane, pentane, etc.), which are prepared by one-step reaction of styrene monomer in autoclave; It can also be polymerized and added with foaming agent to gradually penetrate into the polymer body, which is called two-step method. After one-step foaming, the foam cell of the product is uniform and fine, the product has good elasticity, but the molecular weight of the polymer is low and the quality is poor; The two step product has high molecular weight and good strength, but the operation is complex. Foam is heated under certain conditions, that is, foam plastics. The foaming agent is easy to diffuse and escape in storage, and it is difficult to foam when the content is less than 5%, so it must be sealed and stored at low temperature.

Basic Introduction
As a thermoplastic foam, the expandable polystyrene EPS (Expandable Polystyrene) has undergone a long development process. In 1925, Germany began to produce styrene. At that time, as a rubber intermediate, it laid a foundation for the production of polystyrene; In 1930, suspension PS came out; In 1943, DOW chemical company of the United States took the lead in putting PS foam into industrial production. In 1949, Japan successfully developed extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) and used for product packaging. EPS products first appeared in the German plastics trade fair in 1952.
Performance and Development
Expandable polystyrene has been widely applied in many fields due to its excellent and durable thermal insulation, unique cushioning and shock resistance, aging resistance and water repellency. Several famous companies in the world have successively used different processes and technologies to vigorously carry out application research in their respective fields and continuously developed new products, such as BASF in Germany, Dow chemistry in the United States, Ponzi in Japan, Tsinghua circle in Jilin, China, etc. they not only have a vast market in their own country, but also are leaders in the world, It has played a leading role in the development of expandable polystyrene.
After half a century of development, EPS has formed its own independent industrial system. The application of EPS products is developing rapidly, and new products, new processes and new technologies are emerging. The equipment level has also been continuously improved. The plate forming machine has developed from the initial small-scale manual machine to the large-scale full automatic machine stage; The packaging molding machine has also developed from the original manual lead screw machine and semi-automatic molding machine to vacuum full-automatic molding machine; With the increasing amount of expandable polystyrene, the production of expandable polystyrene resin has developed from "two-step development" to "one-step development", and various expandable polystyrene resins with special properties have been manufactured. Various countries have established associations and organizations related to expandable polystyrene, and universities have expanded the new field of application of expandable polystyrene with the specialty of expandable polystyrene and scientific research institutions of expandable polystyrene. Especially with the rapid popularization of information, the international cooperation and information technology exchange of EPS are increasing day by day. The international development of EPS industry has become a trend.
Because EPS has many valuable properties, it has been widely used in daily life, agriculture, transportation, military industry, aerospace industry, especially in the fields of construction, packaging, electronic and electrical products, ships, vehicles and aircraft manufacturing. Such as TV sets, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, refrigeration systems and other household appliances, electronic instruments, precision instruments, glassware, ceramic products, arts and crafts and other civil light industrial products, fish chops for mariculture, seafood freezing, vegetable preservation, incubators, cold storages, refrigerated trucks, railways and municipal construction are inseparable from EPS plates and packaging products.
EPS is also widely used as decoration materials, film and television scene layout, character modeling, marine life jackets and buoys. In particular, the large foam sheet has a large market demand. It is widely used in the field of housing construction as a color steel sandwich panel, steel wire (plate) grid, light weight composite board, wall panel, roof insulation board and geothermal board. It is used for thermal insulation, heat insulation, water proofing and moistureproof materials on the ground.
Market is the space and reason for enterprises to survive. The rapid development of market economy has created unlimited business opportunities for EPS industry, but the application of EPS in various fields is not balanced. Due to environmental pressure and some corresponding policies and regulations restricting white pollution, the use of EPS in the manufacture of disposable products such as fast food boxes and cups has been gradually prohibited. Affected by various factors, the recovery of expandable polystyrene is still very difficult. New alternative materials will inevitably gradually participate in the market competition of EPS packaging products, so the annual increase of the total amount of expandable polystyrene packaging products in the future will not be too large.
Expandable polystyrene is used as building thermal insulation material because of its excellent thermal insulation, which has great growth potential and broad market prospect. With the vigorous development of China's economy, the development of EPS industry in China has really entered a new era. Energy conservation is the strategic focus of China's energy industry development. In 1986, the Ministry of Construction promulgated the energy efficiency design standard for civil buildings, and then further improved the index of this standard. Before the implementation of the construction skills standard, China had built nearly 8 billion square meters of residential area over the years. Since 2000, the energy-saving transformation of the original buildings with poor thermal environment or high energy consumption in the heating area has begun. In 2005, the state has started energy-saving transformation in key cities and towns. Expandable polystyrene board is very attractive in the reconstruction of old houses because of its excellent properties such as low thermal conductivity, light weight, high strength, waterproof, anti-seepage and easy construction. In October 1, 2001, the Ministry of Construction issued the "energy saving design standard for residential buildings in hot summer and cold winter areas". Its basic goal is to improve the thermal environment quality of residential buildings in China's hot summer and cold winter areas, and improve the energy efficiency.

Hundreds of thousands of tons of EPS are used for commodity packaging, and some packages are thrown away after use, resulting in a very serious environmental protection problem of EPS. However, with the deepening of national environmental protection policies and measures, people's awareness of environmental protection is gradually strengthened, the source of "white pollution" is eradicated, and EPS recycling has brought huge economic benefits Social and environmental benefits. China's industrial policy and market demand will bring EPS materials into full play and have broad prospects.
Pentane series foaming agents can be prepared by direct hydrogenation of C5 fraction or hydrogenation after pentadiene separation. Cyclopentane, pentane and isopentane in carbon five fraction can replace chlorofluorocarbons as foaming agents for polyurethane (PU) and foamed polystyrene foam (EPS). They can also be used as environmental protection refrigerants, and have good economic and social benefits. Different grades of expanded polystyrene require different proportions of n-pentane and isopentane. Generally, the proportion of n-Pentane and Isopentane is between 3:1 and 4:1. The domestic EPS output is estimated to be about 80kta. About 0.08t of foaming agent is consumed per it EPS production, so the annual consumption of foaming agent is about 6.4kt.
