Epoxy resin floors: 4 key questions to get you out of doubt

One of the easiest ways to breathe new life into your home is to change the flooring. Currently there are endless possibilities, which bring the fear of choosing the wrong option, causing us to always end up with the same options: tile or wooden floors. But if you want to get out of the monotony and look for something different, consider epoxy resin floors. It is a self-leveling floor with a smooth and continuous finish (without joints) that can be laid over an existing floor.

What are the advantages?

Resin can quickly revitalize old flooring and is widely used in homes and commercial spaces due to these characteristics:

  • Absence of joints, bringing the feeling of spaciousness and comfort
  • Ease of cleaning, due to the smooth and homogeneous finish
  • High abrasion resistance
  • Quick application
  • Excellent aesthetic finish, which can also be non-slip

Where can it be applied?

It is applied in liquid form, creating a smooth and continuous layer that when it dries hardens and becomes solid and resistant. Being a self-leveling floor, it can be applied in any area of the house and placed on existing floors. It works on slate stone, natural stone, concrete, self-leveling mortar, ceramic or porcelain surfaces and is 1 to 20 mm thick. On the other hand, you have to be more careful if you want to apply it on wood, since if it is not done correctly, it can compromise the final result. The resin covers indoor and outdoor floors in either residential or commercial settings.

Its finish can be matte or glossy and once installed, you have to wait a couple of days for full cure. As for colors and finishes, it is available in:

  • solid colors (with an infinite color palette)
  • streaked
  • metallic
  • drawings and compositions with photographs, called 3D floors

Is it the same as epoxy paint?

Although epoxy paints and epoxy coatings are both based on resin, it must be clear that they are different products. In fact, this has led many people to contract the service by mistake, thinking that it was the same thing.

The main differences between epoxy coating and epoxy paint are: thickness, strength, durability, and the coating's ability to correct ripples and imperfections in the floor, ensuring a much better finish than paint. Lastly, the cost of laying an epoxy resin floor is higher than paint.

What precautions should you take?

Before its application it is important that a technician checks the existing floor and solves any problems that may exist.
