Episode 91: Carl Grant III & How To Live The Abundant Life

Episode 91: Carl Grant III & His Book, How To Live The Abundant Life

Before being an author and a hard-working, super-connecting business development specialist, Carl is man of faith first and family man second. His faith sets the stage for all his work, discipline, and relationships, in order to live that ABUNDANT life he writes and speaks about.

Life had different plans for Carl across different areas. He wanted to follow his father's footsteps into broadcast journalism but was drawn toward business development instead. He considered himself an atheist without any guiding morals in his life until an experience as an officer in the U.S. Army, on a mission so far from home in Nicaragua, turned his attention and faith toward God at age 24.

Carl's is another story of servant leadership, built on both discipline and boundaries, which has served him well at every stage in life and career.

I'm not a deeply religious person, but I always enjoy when my guests talk about their faith and how it's changed their lives -- and those around them through a ripple effect of service and commitment. To me, there are two pieces that stand out the most when it comes to Carl's faith.

The first is how Carl's servant leadership is balanced through service with boundaries. His service to others is not unrelenting and disorganized but instead prioritized and plentiful. He's achieved success in business, family, and community through that discipline and tactical approach to his mind, body, heart, and faith.

The second thing that stands out about his faith is how open Carl is to learning about others. He's studied the Quran and has spoken about the similarities between that religious text and his own Bible. That there are more similarities than differences in the religions -- things we don't know, in general, but from which we would benefit understanding.

CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS

  • The connection between service in the U.S. Army and service mentioned in the Bible.
  • What it looks like to have a more holistic approach to living life.
  • How Carl's book has opened up a dialogue between the East and the West based on his study of both the Bible and the Quran.
  • "Work hard but rest."
  • How you can serve others with success yet set boundaries for yourself

The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Carl is, What is the faith that drives you to make the most of what you can in your work and community? (It doesn't even need to be religion.)
