Welcome back to "AI Weekly" by Aruna - Episode 4 of my AI Newsletter!
I'm Aruna Pattam, your guide through the intricate world of artificial intelligence.
Now, let's delve into the standout developments in AI and Generative AI from the past week, drawing invaluable lessons along the way.
#1: Types of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is like a team of robots with different skill levels.
Narrow AI is the specialist on the team, great at one thing like Siri finding tunes. General AI, still in the works, aims to be the all-rounder, acing any task a human can. Super AI is the futuristic star player, outsmarting human brains, but it's not part of the game yet.
For how these AIs think, Reactive Machines AI can't remember past their last move, while Limited Memory AI, like self-driving cars, learn from the past to improve. The next-level players, Theory of Mind AI and Self-Aware AI, which will understand and possibly have their own emotions, are still in the draft phase.
In short, AI is our versatile team of tech buddies, evolving from task-specific helpers to potential future prodigies, all set to transform our world.
#2: Robotic Guide Dogs: Enhancing Mobility for the Visually Impaired
Binghamton University, under Prof. Shiqi Zhang, has developed a robotic guide dog for the visually impaired, offering safe navigation in crowded areas. The robot, which understands leash tugs, will also support natural language interaction, marking an advance in AI towards empathetic assistance and promoting inclusive mobility for all.
?#3: DOD: The Future of Defense: Embracing AI
The Defense Secretary's new AI strategy emphasizes innovation and high-quality data for better AI in defense. It reinforces the DoD's commitment to ethical AI and aims to make AI a key part of defense strategy, potentially enhancing the U.S.'s position in global tech leadership and security, with significant implications for global security dynamics.
#4: Accelerating the UAE’s Digital Pulse with AI
AI is set to be a driving force in the UAE's digital evolution, as highlighted by Satya Nadella. The launch of Azure OpenAI Service from UAE data centers paves the way for innovative AI applications. Microsoft's collaboration with the UAE is sparking a tech-forward ecosystem. Consider the potential: AI could revolutionize your business, bringing exciting, transformative changes.
?#5:? Navigating the AI Job Surge: Data Scientists Wanted!
AI's job market is booming, with a 4000% surge in demand, especially for data scientists who are pivotal for AI's progress. No longer lone engineers, they're industry influencers across various sectors. These "data magicians" interpret massive data sets for key business strategies. While degrees are important, skills, continuous learning, and adaptability are paramount in AI. The rewards are substantial, with six-figure salaries and flexible work options. As AI reshapes careers, becoming a data scientist could be a wise choice.

#6: Learning From Mistakes Makes LLM Better Reasoner?
Microsoft's 'LeMa' is a groundbreaking AI that learns from mistakes, promising to revolutionize AI-dependent fields with its self-improving capabilities. This innovation could outpace human error correction, setting a new standard for problem-solving technology.
#7: The Hidden Thirst of AI Innovation
As AI like ChatGPT and Google's Bard make strides, they leave a silent ripple in their wake—massive water usage. In 2022, tech titans like Google, Microsoft, and Meta drew more water than some countries.
With these companies aiming for "water positive" futures, it's crucial to ask: can tech growth and environmental stewardship coexist? Is the AI industry’s water consumption a trade-off we're prepared to make?
We must balance AI’s thirst for innovation with the planet’s finite resources.
?#8: Transforming Job Searches with AI
?LinkedIn's hit a grand tally of 1 billion members and it's revolutionizing job search with an AI "job seeker coach" for Premium users. This tool, leveraging GPT-4, promises to enhance the job application process with personalized advice and instant feedback.
As we embrace AI's potential, LinkedIn is keen on delivering a seamless and bias-free experience. It's a significant stride towards smarter, more equitable job matching. This move by LinkedIn raises important questions about AI's role in our professional lives.
#9: AWS Unveils On-Demand GPU's for AI
In a strategic move by AWS, the cloud giant has rolled out EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML—a service that's like a 'hotel for GPUs'. This service allows innovators to rent Nvidia's coveted GPUs for short-term AI projects, offering a flexible, budget-friendly solution for machine learning ventures.
Imagine renting a powerhouse of AI processing for just the time you need—no more, no less. AWS's latest offering ensures that small-scale operations and temporary experiments are no longer limited by the high costs of long-term GPU investments. It's an open invitation for startups and researchers to leap into AI without the financial burden.
This initiative is poised to democratize access to advanced AI technologies.
?#10: How does generative AI work?
Imagine you have a super creative friend who's really good at drawing. You give them a piece of paper and say, "Draw me a dragon." They think about all the dragons they've seen in books, movies, and games, mix all those ideas up, and then draw a unique dragon just for you.
Generative AI works a bit like that friend. It's a type of smart computer program that has looked at a lot of pictures, read lots of texts, or listened to lots of music. When you ask it to create something, like a story or a picture, it remembers all the things it's learned, combines them in new ways, and comes up with something new and original.
It does this using a recipe (we call it an algorithm) that helps it understand what you're asking for. Then it stirs up everything it knows to 'cook' up something that it thinks you'll like. The more it 'learns' from different examples, the better it gets at making new stuff!
That wraps up our newsletter for this week. Feel free to reach out anytime. Have a great day, and I look forward to our next one in a week!
