Here is a funny anecdote from my life as a freelance translator:

Some years ago, I was given a translation task and confidently assumed I knew the deadline, so I didn't bother writing it down. I wondered why the client gave me so little time for the huge amount of words I had to translate, but I accepted it nonetheless. It didn't even cross my mind to double-check the deadline. After two whole days and nights (!) of hard work, me almost getting sick from the stress and the pressure to provide top-notch quality even though the deadline was too tight, I delivered happily 15 minutes before the agreed deadline. Well, the deadline I thought was agreed upon. In fact, I remembered incorrectly and had five more days until the real deadline! The client was super happy with the translation – the quality and the speed –, and we had a good laugh about my – sorry to say that – stupidity. You can be sure this has never happened to me again, as it was a valuable but painful lesson. It's better to double-check deadlines and to write them down. Trust me, you better be safe than sorry. ??
