Episode Summary
- Dr. Morgan used cannabis as a teenager to relieve anxiety and has always been interested in psychoactive drugs and psychiatry.
- Dr. Morgan noticed in his work in adult addiction treatment, that cannabis addiction was very rare and in fact his clinic wouldn’t even admit patients if their primary substance was cannabis.
- 15 years ago, when Dr. Morgan moved to Israel, he began researching cannabis and its relationship to biological weapons.
- He found that the pharmacological properties of the plant were beneficial against the toxic elements of chemical war nerve agents, commonly used in the middle east.
- He currently has a patent issued in Israel for the use of cannabis against chemical war agents around the use of cannabinoids and terpenes for the treatment of organophosphate and carbamate toxicity. The patent is pending in the US, Canada, and The EU.
- Along the way he discovered a way to make cannabis legal, taking it outside of Schedule I in the United States by extracting cannabinoids from legal medicines and combining them with terpenes.
- CBD can help to reduce cravings for illicit drugs, with THC encouraging the body to produce its own opioids to help with withdrawal.
- Several studies have shown that heroin addicts who have access to cannabis and who use cannabis, inject less often in a statistically significant way.
- Dr. Morgan believes that cannabis can be used as a way to reduce harm within addicts by satisfying the brain’s reward system, without giving toxic impacts or negative side effects.
- He prescribes cannabis by its properties and what effect the person is seeking, rather than its taxonomy. This allows the patient or user to have a much more targeted experience.
- Short-term memory loss is often considered a negative side effect of cannabis, although dr. Morgan sees this as a positive when cannabis is being used to treat painful conditions as it helps the patient forget their discomfort.
Quotables
CBD will reduce cravings, whether it’s for cigarettes, whether it’s for heroin or cocaine. THC has impacts on the endogenous opioid system to get the body to release its own opioids like endorphins and enkephalins, which will help with withdrawal. 16:20
modern FDA approved medicines have moved to single APIs. Herbal medicine, including cannabis, has hundreds of APIs, active pharmaceutical ingredients, so to get it FDA-approved, you have to do some level of toxicology and safety studies on each of the chemical constituents. 33:00
