Episode #1: The Journey from Immigrant Bicycle Courier to Healthcare Entrepreneur

Episode #1: The Journey from Immigrant Bicycle Courier to Healthcare Entrepreneur

Dear Reader,

Today marks a new chapter for this newsletter.

While some of you might remember my previous content about hormonal imbalance, I've decided to pivot towards something that's been at the core of my life's journey - the immigrant entrepreneur experience.

Did you know?

  • Immigrant entrepreneurs start businesses at nearly twice the rate of native-born Americans
  • 44% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants or their children
  • In the UK, 1 in 7 companies are founded by immigrants

These statistics aren't just numbers to me - they reflect the determination that drives people to leave everything behind and start anew. Fourteen years ago, I was one of them, stepping off a bus (yup, travelled 2 days on the bus as it was waaay cheaper ??) from Poland into the busy streets of London.

The Early Days

Like many immigrants, I carried with me two things: hope and determination. The first five months tested both. Job hunting in a foreign country, where even ordering coffee felt like a daily challenge, taught me my first lesson in resilience.

Fun fact: Studies show that entrepreneurs who've failed previously have a 20% higher success rate on their next venture. Failure isn't just an option - it's often a stepping stone.

When I finally landed a position as a bike courier, it wasn't just about delivering packages - it was about understanding the fundamentals of London's life from the ground up. I learned about postcodes, tube lines and that everything down from the Thames is "South London".

Through dedication and consistent effort, I worked my way up to become the youngest senior operations controller in the company. However, after almost a decade in logistics, I noticed something concerning: the industry had become complacent, and resistant to innovation and change.

The Entrepreneurial Leap

In 2016, I made what many considered a risky move. With a loan and a single moped (and my first son about to be born!), I founded Medical Logistics - London's only 24/7 medical courier service.

Key Milestones:

  • 2016: Started with one moped and a dream
  • 2018: Identified healthcare gap through personal experience
  • 2019: Became a certified phlebotomist
  • 2020-2022: Expanded during COVID, secured UKAS Accreditation
  • 2023: Launched Medical Laboratories and Medical Drones for the NHS
  • 2024: Pivoted to new ventures after facing challenges

Life has a way of shaping our business decisions in unexpected ways. When my wife experienced pregnancy complications in 2018, it opened my eyes to a significant gap in healthcare accessibility. This personal challenge became the catalyst for expanding into healthcare services.

Lessons Learned

What I've discovered along the way:

  1. Innovation often comes from personal pain points
  2. Sometimes the best opportunities arise from setbacks
  3. The ability to pivot is more valuable than perfect execution
  4. Building a community is as important as building a business

Today, I'm building BodyCheck.me, a healthcare brand that seamlessly blends conventional medicine with holistic wellness. This vision stems from years of experience navigating the strengths and shortcomings of traditional healthcare systems. While the journey is not without its challenges (3 MVPs released with no joy...??), the pace of change in the industry is faster than ever, demanding a whole new level of execution. What was cutting-edge technology or an innovative solution yesterday quickly became obsolete today.
