The Epic Saga of Juggling Toddlerhood while Working from Home

Helping to improve business operations and maximize growth.
Towards the end of the summer, I found myself in a quandary when we sold our house and moved in with my mom while our new house was being built. Because of how far she lived from my mother-in-law (who was helping to take care of my 12-month-old), I lost my childcare for a whole (LONG) 4 months. I had to quickly figure out how to navigate the treacherous path of being a full-time caretaker to my adorable but mischievous toddler daughter while working from home. I was not prepared for this rollercoaster of emotions – from challenging and mentally complicated moments to light-hearted chaos and revelations.
First things first, let's establish that choosing between my daughter and work was as frequent as deciding between pizza and chocolate; yes, that often. But each time, I wholeheartedly chose my little munchkin. Luckily, I had the privilege of having a flexible and understanding workplace, which allowed me to make that decision without compromising my precious time with her.
For those envisioning a serene work environment, let me clarify that my "office" (also known as the living room couch) was more like a battlefield of toys, distractions, and new discoveries. With my mother and husband preoccupied with their own busy schedules, I found myself navigating through it all on my own. Complaining seemed futile, especially considering my mother's demanding schedule of juggling two toddlers, a full-time job, and night school when I was younger; with her still graduating magna-cum-laude, I might add. So, I embraced the challenge, taking on the role of a true warrior, determined to figure it all out.
Let's talk about my calls, those poor little creatures. They were downgraded automatically, like second-class citizens. Not that my family didn't take my job seriously, but I may have subtly whispered that it was the least important. I mean, who could resist my toddler's charm, right?

Amidst the chaos, I proudly maintained a facade of composure at work. Fires were raging in the background, toys strewn everywhere, but my professional dignity remained intact. I had to reply to emails in the wee hours of the morning or later in the evening, take calls during her nap times and be at peace with working at my own pace, without my typical ninja speed. But I was able to do it, without anyone noticing the madness going on. I was an expert at hiding it, like a secret agent!
However, an epiphany struck me in the midst of these adventures – we shouldn't have to conceal the chaos! Instead of pretending that everything is manageable, it's important to foster an environment where we feel at ease with sharing the ups and downs of our work life. You can still be fully engaged in the things that matter most to you without having to de-prioritize and live in the shadows. Work and life should dance together in harmony, like best friends who know when to take the spotlight or step aside. In this day-in-age where we are hearing so much about maintaining a healthy work-life and what that looks like, we need to ensure we are just as comfortable with being uncomfortable and not afraid to share that with our colleagues. Take the time to make adjustments that work for you. Your job should work for you as much as you work for it. Investing in your mental wellbeing is the key to being successful in anything you work for in life.
So, my fellow jugglers, let us unite! Let us celebrate the wild journey of parenting and working from home, daring to be imperfect and embracing the hilarity that unfolds before our eyes. Together, we shall conquer the chaos and triumph as champions of laughter and love!
PS – I am moved into my new home and have my sweet mother-in-law back helping out with the baby. That is, at least, until she moves overseas in 2 months. To be continued….
