My career has been such an amazing ride. Last night, at Jones Beach I had the opportunity to train and work with one of my favorite bands: O.A.R (Of a Revolution). If you have not heard these guys, you need should do yourself a favor!
They have an amazing vibe/ groove and blend of sounds from rock to reggae. Their music is filled with relatable stories and emotional provocations that really reach deep into the soul.
My story with these guys started years ago after being introduced by a friend to their music after a road trip to West Virginia. They quickly became my go to music after a long day at the stadium- bringing me back down to reality on my ride home after each game.
We all have those bands or shows that help to ground us and neutralize our thought process after a hard work day, week or travel schedule- O.A.R. is the group that does it for me!
Anyway, enough of my rock and roll fantasies!
Over the past few years I have become friendly with these guys and have had the chance to work/ train them when they come through the New York area on their tour.
Yesterday was one of those training days. This was also a day with quite a few lessons I was hoping to share with you.
Lesson 1: Stay in Your Lane.. this is something trumpet player Jon Lampley (https://www.jonlampleymusic.com) and I were talking about in the tour bus. Life is much more complicated when you work against the things you are great at "naturally". Find the things you are great at, you are passionate about and then spend every waking hour creating, chasing and building. If you don't, you will live a life time of wondering and feeling incomplete.
Lesson 2: Train as a Team. My favorite part of working with these guys is how hard they train and how they work as a team when they train. I feel like I am back on the field with the Yankees! I push these guys and they never quit. They train before almost every show, as a team. Fitness is a huge priority of theirs. I have a theory that those who sweat together, win together! I have seen it in baseball and now music.
Lesson 3: Appreciate the Journey. Get out there. If you have a message or something to share, get it out there. Richard, the bands guitar player said he appreciates touring now more than ever because he realizes how hard it is to make it and that nothing lasts forever. Watching the crowd respond to your music is what it is all about. It inspires you to create more and do more. The same is true for you. Get some momentum, find your tribe and deliver. Whether it is in the workplace or in your household, get some momentum going and appreciate each step of the journey.
Lesson 4: Success is about staying power. Success is not about making a quick splash, but about winning over the long haul. Developing a product, brand and your character in a way that allows you to win over the long term is success. Creating a one hit wonder is great in the moment, but you will soon feel the need and craving to do more. Whatever you build, think long term. In thinking long term, this will require patience. Success is built over time via positive relationships, delivering massive value and never getting to high or low emotionally.
Lesson 5: Partnerships can help you and others win. Marc Roberge, the bands lead singer said they love touring with great bands like TRAIN because even after 20 years of touring and playing, they love picking up new fans. Sharing their music on another bands tour, and vice versa, allows that to happen. Same in life and business. It should not be all about competition. Strategic partnerships and alliances without defensiveness and ego can lend itself to both sides winning big!
Lastly, when it comes to doing something at a high level for a long time, training for the long game is essential. Training is what allows your performances to remain at the highest level over decades. Training yourself physically in a competitive way- pushing the limit to make #gainz will allow you to enjoy the fruits of your labor and success for the longest duration.
When you truly find what you want to do, are supposed to do and are called to do, you will find your flow. Dig in. Visualize. Go make your dreams happen no matter what your age. You can do it if you believe you can. #likeapro
