Epic hikes from around the world
So, I'm actively walking, exercising, and working on my fitness in general over Lockdown, and I'm always looking for my next big adventure. So this is for you. For each and every one of you who wants to get fit, have a goal, or simply loves adventure and challenge.
If you’ve been looking to make your holidays more active, adding the opportunity to embrace the joys of nature and taking in the spectacular natural landscapes from around the world, then tying in an epic hike could be the perfect addition to your next getaway. To help you choose where to go, I’ve selected some of myfavourite international ascents.
Inca Trail, Peru
If you’re visiting Peru, the challenging ascents and descents of the Inca Trail should be top of the to-do list. On top of allowing you the chance to observe Peru’s striking mountain landscapes and explore its verdant jungle, this 26-mile hike culminates with a trip to the ancient Incan citadel at Machu Picchu.
Kungsleden, Sweden
Despite the entirety of Kungsleden, or ‘The King’s Trail’, measuring 275 miles in total, the shorter 65-mile hike takes just three to five days, starting at Abisko Mountain Station and ending in the Saami Village of Nikkaluokta.
Early September is the best time to explore the captivating Arctic wilderness of giant glaciers and open tundra, with comfortable huts welcoming you back from the solitude after each day’s walk.
Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim, Arizona, USA
Experience the iconic Grand Canyon as you traverse between both rims and the river bed of this natural spectacle in Arizona.
Get up close to the unique geological landscape as you wind along trails to the Colorado River. Enjoy contemplative camping in the South Rim before ascending through the core of the canyon to the remote reaches of the North Rim.
Pacific Crest Trail, California, Oregon and Washington, USA
For adventurous hikers seeking the ultimate expedition, the Pacific Crest Trail through California, Oregon and Washington will no doubt fit the bill.
The trail covers around 2,650 miles of the USA’s scenic West Coast, taking in several national parks, the Mojave Desert and climbs of up to 13,000 feet.
Chilkoot Trail, Alaska and Yukon, USA and Canada
Explore untouched Alaska and Yukon Territory landscapes as you scale the Golden Stairs, the Scales and the Stone Crib on a route harking back to the region’s gold mining legacy of the 1800’s.
Expect to find rusting equipment left behind by exhausted miners on this iconic North American wilderness route, taking you up to the crest at Chilkoot Pass before guiding you through an alpine winter wonderland.
Tonquin Valley, Alberta, Canada
The wild valleys of the Canadian Rockies await as you spend three to five days hiking through The Ramparts mountain range, overlooking the Autumn-hued waters of Amethyst Lake.
Tonquin Valley, in the depths of the mountains, was relatively unexplored until the early 1900’s. Travelling through the area today is possible on a looping hike guiding you through an unrivalled backcountry.
Bay of Fires, Tasmania, Australia
Incorporating some of the most beautiful stretches of white sands and crystal-clear Tasman Sea waters in Australia, Tasmania’s Bay of Fires route comprises a 16-mile, four-day guided trip through ethereal scenery compounded by the blood-red dye of the scattered granite boulders found throughout.
Beginning in Mount William National Park and finishing at the inviting Bay of Fires Lodges, you will combine picturesque seaside walks with evening stays at permanent camps and cosy lodges complete with refreshing fine wine and unwinding creature comforts.
Queen Charlotte Track, New Zealand
Located on New Zealand’s South Island, the Queen Charlotte Track can be enjoyed throughout the year due to the region’s pleasant year-round temperatures.
Combine a stay in the wine-growing region of Marlborough with a unique hiking tour of renowned historical points including Ship’s Cove, where British explorer Captain Cook could regularly be seen during the 1770’s. Embrace a style of Kiwi hiking known locally as ‘freedom walking’, as you camp throughout the three to five-day journey.
Tour du Mont Blanc, France, Italy and Switzerland
Discover the best of the Alps and explore three countries in one visit as you circumnavigate the highest range in Western Europe. A week to ten-day hike touring Mont Blanc is undeniably a special experience, as you climb several impressive peaks offering sublime views of dramatic glaciers.
“The valley boasts one of the best hut systems in the Alps, including the gem of Rifugio Bonatti. With a sweeping view of the glaciers, the rifugio is more mountain hotel than hut, serving up Italian delicacies and aperitifs from a full bar.”
