EPIC Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation | September 15 - October 15, 2022
Hispanic Heritage Month was started to promote the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic Americans; most specifically, those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.?The observance itself began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson.?It was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period that would start on September 15 and end on October 15.
The theme for 2022 is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation”; it is intended to encourage us to ensure that all voices are represented and welcomed to help build stronger communities and a stronger nation.
Beginning on September 15 is important for many reasons. It is the independence anniversary of El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras. The independence days of Mexico and Chile fall on September 16 and September 18, respectively, and Dia de la Raza or Columbus Day falls on October 12.
Hispanic Americans have had significant influence in the U.S. Military, space exploration, government, and advocacy and the community has been integral to the prosperity of the U.S.
