EPA Pursues Specialist Advice on Phthalates, Highlights in HSE REACH Progress, EU Rodenticide Update and More!
Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter?where we bring you the latest updates and insights.
Before sharing this week's news, we're excited to share a project that could significantly benefit companies navigating PFAS complexities within their products and?supply chains. If PFAS detection isn't within your scope of interest, feel free to skip ahead to this week's highlights.
Introducing Our PFAS Checker
We've developed a tool designed to assist companies in determining the presence of PFAS substances and understanding their specific classifications according to the definitions set by PRIO, OECD, and the EPA.
We Need Your Insight!
To ensure our PFAS Checker meets diverse industry needs, we're inviting companies to participate in testing its effectiveness across various scenarios.

EPA Seeks Experts for Critical Review of Phthalates Risk Evaluations
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking nominations for scientific experts to join the Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC) for a critical review of the Draft Risk Evaluations for Di-isodecyl Phthalate (DIDP) and Di-isononyl Phthalate (DINP) under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). This initiative aims to ensure a scientifically rigorous evaluation process, reflecting the EPA's proactive approach to chemical safety and pollution prevention. Nominations are open until 1 April, 2024.
HSE's Strides in Chemical Safety and Animal Welfare: A 2023 Recap
The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reported significant progress in evaluating chemical substance dossiers under UK REACH, focusing on compliance and the 3Rs principle (Reduction, Refinement, Replacement) in animal testing. In 2023, HSE completed compliance checks on 55% of the submitted novel substance dossiers and made strides in adjusting testing proposals to minimize animal testing, demonstrating a commitment to both chemical safety and animal welfare.
EU Delays Rodenticide Deadline: A Window for Review
The European Commission has extended the approval expiry dates for seven active substances used in rodenticides until 31 December, 2026, to allow for a thorough review of their safety and environmental compatibility. This decision ensures that rodenticide use continues to balance effective pest control with public health and environmental standards, highlighting the EU's precautionary approach to chemical regulation.
EPA Publishes Updated Risk Assessment for Malathion Highlighting No Human Health Risks
The EPA has released an updated draft human health risk assessment for malathion, concluding that the pesticide poses no significant human health risks when used as directed. This assessment, which revises the 2016 findings using new information and methodologies, supports malathion's continued use in agriculture and public health, particularly for mosquito control. The findings rely on modern scientific techniques and comprehensive exposure data to ensure public safety.
EPA Seeks Public Input on Formaldehyde Risk Evaluation Peer Reviewers
The EPA is seeking public feedback on the selection of peer reviewers for its formaldehyde risk evaluation scheduled for May 2024. This step is part of the EPA's commitment under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to enhance chemical safety assessments. The public is encouraged to review candidate biographies and submit comments by 14 March, 2024, ensuring that the evaluation process is transparent and based on sound scientific judgment.
