Ep 60: Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism on the Carnivore Diet
?? Navigating Thyroid Medication Changes and Finding Balance: My Carnivore Journey
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about the ongoing, often frustrating, journey with my thyroid medication and how it's intertwined with my shift to a carnivore lifestyle. If you’ve ever felt the need to take control of your health journey and make adjustments that truly reflect your experience, you’re not alone. Here’s what’s been on my mind lately.
?? Thyroid Medication Adjustments: Why Does It Keep Changing?
After years of stability, my thyroid levels have been fluctuating again. It’s been a real rollercoaster since moving from South Africa, where I was stable for nearly a decade. Recently, I received my latest test results, but I find myself frustrated as I don’t fully understand them. The doctors are adjusting my dosage, but I feel like there’s something more to it—why was I stable for so long, and now, things are changing so often? ??
It’s a little disappointing, especially when I was hoping to reduce my dosage even further. I can’t help but wonder: are these changes due to a lack of context? Would they adjust my medication differently if they knew about my dietary changes or lifestyle? If only they asked…
?? My Carnivore Diet: A Shift to Simplicity
On a more positive note, I’ve been really committed to the carnivore diet, and it’s been quite a transformation. I’ve had my ups and downs, of course—who doesn’t? The amazing part has been the gradual decrease in cravings. Sugar used to have such a hold on me, but now? I can confidently say that the urge for something sweet is almost non-existent. ??
There’s something liberating about saying no to sugar, bread, and other carbs. It makes me feel more in control, and that control has started to spill over into other areas of my life, giving me confidence to tackle challenges beyond just food.
?? Adjusting My Protein Intake: Less is More?
Lately, I’ve noticed something unexpected—I’m feeling fuller quicker and eating less meat than before. At first, I thought maybe I was just tired of steak, but after speaking with Herman, it turns out this might be part of the body adjusting. It's weird because I thought I'd need to eat loads of protein to feel satisfied, but here I am, eating less and still feeling great. ??
It's a reminder that everyone's carnivore experience is different, and our needs can change over time. If you're doing something similar, give yourself time and space to adapt.

??♀? Health Wins Beyond Weight Loss
Though I initially hoped for weight loss (haven’t we all been there?), that hasn’t been the biggest win for me yet. Instead, my energy levels, hair health, and nails have improved significantly. My sugar cravings are under control, and I no longer feel enslaved by carb addiction. These are the wins that matter to me now. ??
The weight loss will come, but I’m not stressing about it. My real goal? Getting off my thyroid medication altogether, and I’m determined to get there in time.
?? What I’m Reading
Alongside all the health changes, I’ve been getting back into reading—a personal victory in itself. After finally finishing The Fountainhead, I’m diving into some lighter reads and a few business books on my shelf. Next up is The Speed of Trust by Stephen Covey, along with some Agatha Christie mysteries (a guilty pleasure!). ??
It's funny—just over a year ago, I never thought I'd call myself a reader, and here I am, proving myself wrong. The same way I’m overcoming sugar, I’m realising that we can conquer anything we set our minds to—whether it’s books or health.
?? Wrapping Up
As I continue this journey with my health, my thyroid, and my carnivore lifestyle, I’m learning patience and trust in myself. I’m no longer tied to the scale or the medication label. Instead, I’m focused on the wins that matter: my cravings, my energy, and how I feel day-to-day.
To everyone going through similar journeys—whether with medication, lifestyle changes, or just trying to figure out what works best for you—I’m right there with you. Keep experimenting, keep learning, and most of all, keep trusting yourself. ??
