Ep 4. Mariana Mazzucato, Mission Economy

Ep 4. Mariana Mazzucato, Mission Economy

Getting to the moon in the 1960s required innovations in aeronautics, electronics, nutrition, materials, and software. Professor Mariana Mazzucato of University College London reminds us that the many challenges we face to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals will require similar innovations. We need our own moonshot missions to address climate change, poverty and inequality reduction, universal health and education, and more.

In this episode, Prof. Mazzucato joins the Book Club with Jeffrey Sachs to discuss her new book, Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism. She helps us to think about what capitalism and markets do and should look like; the implications of private sector innovations funded by public money; best practices for public institutions to achieve inclusive sustainable growth; and what is being accomplished with the European COVID-19 recovery plans and the European Green Deal.

And the finance that's out there goes to the wrong things. Less than 1% of Australian philanthropy is spent on the environment. And only a fraction of that is spent on the Ocean. Hi Jeffrey Sachs long time no see! (CIIM and UCD to help you with context) It could be interesting to have a session dedicated to the new edition of Charles Eisentein's book Sacred Economics https://charleseisenstein.org/books/sacred-economics/ Charles is a deep, original and provocative thinker and writer and i would guess that at least some of his ideas would resonate with you. Happy to make the connection if it is of interest. Friends of Charles Eisenstein
