Connor Heaney
Future of Work, Contingent Workforce Expert & Award Winning Podcast Host
In today's rapidly evolving workplace, the intersection of technology and talent management is reshaping how businesses find, engage, and retain employees. Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with Derek Sanders , Chief Revenue Officer at Opptly, who provided fascinating insights into how AI and technology are driving the future of work.
The Changing Face of Recruitment
Derek’s journey from the traditional staffing world to leading a cutting-edge platform like Oply has given him a unique perspective on the evolution of recruitment. He emphasized that one of the core missions at Oply is removing friction between talent and work, allowing companies to streamline hiring processes and focus on what matters: finding the right people for the right roles.
"We’re seeing a shift to skills-based hiring," Derek said, noting that instead of focusing solely on a candidate’s resume, companies are now looking at the broader scope of their skills. AI is playing a pivotal role here, helping recruiters identify top talent faster by automating the ranking and scoring of candidates. This, in turn, reduces time to hire and enhances the candidate experience.
The Role of AI in Recruitment
While there’s a lot of buzz around AI potentially replacing human jobs, Derek sees things differently. "AI is not about replacing recruiters," he stressed. "It’s about enhancing them." By leveraging automation, recruiters can focus on the human elements of hiring—building relationships, understanding company culture, and ensuring a great match between candidate and employer. The role of AI is to speed up the more tedious processes, enabling recruiters to do what they do best.
Remote Work and Flexibility
As the conversation turned toward remote work, Derek spoke about how technology has enabled a new kind of work-life balance. He shared his personal experience of managing a successful career while living in Hawaii, emphasizing that, with the right tools, location is no longer a limitation for productivity.
“The flexibility to work from anywhere is here to stay,” Derek remarked. However, he also acknowledged that there is still value in in-person interactions, particularly for collaboration and building relationships within teams.
The Future of Work
Looking ahead, Derek believes that talent marketplaces will continue to grow in importance, giving workers more autonomy and choice while helping companies tap into global talent pools. At the same time, companies will need to invest in technology that helps them understand and leverage the skills of their workforce to stay competitive.
In short, the future of work is one where technology and human expertise go hand in hand, creating more efficient and fulfilling experiences for both employees and employers.
