EO 23/24 - From the Board Room to the Dorm Room

EO 23/24 - From the Board Room to the Dorm Room

To start 2024, I committed to looking back at 2023 and the year in Earth Observation to set my priorities for the new year.?What immediately became apparent was the rapid growth and interest in EO data and the Space industry at all levels. From the C-Suite Board Room to the Dorm Room. Last year, I learned a lot from both rooms via their different perspectives, and they absolutely helped me understand their needs and my objectives for the new year.

Much of this insight came from Geospatial Student Sessions at GoGeomatics in Calgary with the students from the, 加拿大卡尔加里大学 Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) SAIT, 加拿大卡尔顿大学 , and others. In each case, the students came prepared with their resumes, discussed their current projects, and pitched their candidacy for a career opportunity at EarthDaily Analytics .

In each case, they had to answer the following two questions for an opportunity to join the EarthDaily team.

Student Questions - from EarthDaily

1.)? Why did you choose a career in the Space Industry?

?2.)? How would you use the daily data from EarthDaily’s 22 spectral bands covering Visible, Near-, Shortwave-,Mid-wave-, and Thermal-Infrared bands?

Their answers and combinations of spectral bands to highlight specific EO Use Cases were impressive. One of the most impressive things is that they all chose similar and disparate Use Cases.

The top Use Cases they each discussed are below, and the bands they cited the most were the SWIR and Thermal bands.

Student Use Cases?

  • Vegetation management and wildfire prevention.
  • Monitoring biodiversity
  • Methane Detection
  • Risk Mitigation

?A few students even launched their own satellite. The mission failed, and their satellite is currently lost in space, but it did not deter them. Not at all. Immediately. I wish could write a Seed check for a specific student to start their own company. The next potential Elon Musk was standing in front of me. I hope this article reaches and inspires you.

?These discussions were encouraging; in some ways, the Dorm Room was more inspiring to me in 2024 than the Board room.

We are in expert hands, not just in 2024 but more so in 2077 and beyond.

?? Reflecting on the expanse of the Space Industry and Earth Observation highlights a truth that Socrates once shared - The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. ?? Your commitment to learning and advancing in this field is exactly what propels us toward a future filled with innovation and discovery. ?? Keep aiming for the stars; the universe is your canvas. ?? #Inspiration #Growth #SpaceIndustry

This I do not doubt -- "These discussions were encouraging; in some ways, the Dorm Room was more inspiring to me in 2024 than the Board room."
