Environmental, Social, and Governance: RIP or Jeete Raho?
Author: Shivani Maudgal Datta , Vice President ESG, Airtel
2023 has witnessed backlash on ESG including "ESG should RIP". However, robust scientific evidence remains the bedrock of responsible investing, and provides the North Star for sustainable consumer and business decisions. Understanding the "why" and "what" of ESG, not just the "how" (disclosures etc.), is key. Global standardization initiatives like International Sustainability Standards Board? are paving the way for an auditable recipe for comparable ESG disclosures.?
Let's explore the ESG disclosure pyramid to answer the ‘Why’ of sustainability.?
The ESG Disclosure Pyramid:
Why: Since 1950, human activity has pressurized and outcompeted Earth's natural processes – acceptance of this led to coining of the term Anthropocene – the Age of Man. The global scientific community embraced sustainable development through the 1987 “Our Common Future” report: “sustainable development -?“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs “.?
This decade?is the only time we have to make a difference, else the breached planetary thresholds will push us into a new state of the earth's system which we have no lived history of.
Social inequities, like the Nobel recognized gender gap determination study&, demand urgent action too. Diversity and inclusion are key as we build a sustainable future.
What: The UN's Sustainable Development Goals and international umbrella agreements on the carbon and nature-based economies provide actionable blueprints for conducting sustainable business inclusive of value chains (e.g. using life cycle assessment and circularity principles to identify and manage hotspots).?
How: With the rise of multiple voluntary ESG tools to assess risks, opportunities and performance (the alphabet soup), a collaborative effort is underway to develop universal, standardized and verifiable disclosure frameworks akin to financial disclosures. Industry specific metrics are being developed to measure progress.?
India’s SEBI and the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive have mandated disclosures (including for value chain) for companies meeting set thresholds. Regulations also underline the need for robust data governance.
What do we gain: By embracing ESG principles, we can enhance our climate resilience, maintain good corporate reputation, meet expectations for social license to operate, attract talent, better manage risk, and contribute to a better future by identifying new business and partnership opportunities and improved access to capital.
In conclusion, given the already visible extreme climate change impacts (with 2023 being declared the hottest year till date), integration of ESG within business is an imperative for long term growth. Far from RIP, it should be tended to meticulously so it may thrive, because then so do we.

4 周airtel is the most third class DTH connection provider I have ever seen in my life! I purchased airtel dth and they took payment for 6 months SD channel recharge. But now I purchased a hd tv and I want to change my pack from SD to HD but airtel is not allowing me to do that. They said you can't change your package till the expiry of your current package. Is it a joke going on? If customers want to change their package, they should have that right to change it. Is it possible to wait for that long? Once airtel receives the payment they won't take any responsibility. You guys are cheaters and do scams with people. Shame on you! The above I posted a few days ago and recently I received a call from their end. They took my precious time and said "we can't change the pack till the expiry of your package". On a serious note honestly suggesting you from my experience, of someone planning to buy an airtel dth or internet connection, don't ever make that mistake. Their service is the worst and they only know how to make money by fooling people. They have their own nonsense policies which they will never tell you while selling. They are not transparent and completely fraud. If you ignore this, you will regret it. Fraud, Cheaters!
