Environmental month is everyone’s challenge to tackle

South Africa celebrates Environmental month in June, coinciding with World Environment Day, on 5th June. Both this day and month encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment, and now more than ever, we need high impact solutions, from both the public and private sector.

At Liberty Two Degrees, we understand the need to partner with our stakeholders to accelerate positive impact on the climate and natural environment and we have ambitious Net Zero targets ?

In fact, our portfolio which includes Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square and Eastgate Shopping Centre among others – has embodied great environmental leadership and stewardship, showcasing a commitment to creating spaces that benefit generations by ensuring a minimal impact on the environment through our Net Zero targets and supporting initiatives. We are proud to have lead many firsts in the industry of which in the environmental sustainability space, these include; the L2D portfolio being the first in the retail space to achieve green start certification by the GBCSA, the first landlord to join SA Plastics Pact which aims to create a circular economy for plastics while we also introduced a policy that bans problematic plastics in our portfolio, we were recently the first to achieve Net Zero Waste in retail South Africa and our superregional asset Eastgate Shopping Centre has debuted South Africa’s largest registered solar rooftop installation.??

Water resilience has become a big factor for malls. Ensuring that our malls are resilient and safe guarded against water shedding is important in ensuring a positive customer experience, but more so our ability to ensure that we are responsible in how we consume this scarce resource is important for us, ensuring that we meet our Net Zero Water readiness. Our commitment goes even further in taking our tenants and customers ?on an educational journey to ensure they partner on this journey with us in achieving.?

As L2D, we remain committed to continually assessing our climate related risks and opportunities. As we commentate this day, we hope that it continues to raise much needed environmental awareness within our country and its business leaders, and we remain steadfast in playing our part.
