Environment is Everything
It is easier to build new habits when you are not fighting old cues
“It is easier to build new habits in a new environment as you are not fighting old cues” is a line that jumped out at me whilst reading the book Atomic Habits and it was relevant to me because I was moving apartments and had a lot going on in my life from personal to professional, from creative to casual.
I was not writing at all, I was creating very little music and playing occasionally. I had a good set up but I was no longer at peace, and my home was no longer private for me, it was no longer my escape. At the time my job had asked me to reduce my live out allowance, which I did. My personal life was going through big changes, as is the ebbs and flows of life and as Snoop Dogg once said, “Ups and Downs, Smiles and Frowns”
However this is not all drab and blab, as I am now sitting in my minimalistic and clean living room, on an inexpensive table. I have a candle lit on my left hand side accompanied by a warm cup of coffee. On my right, is a note book with the diagram of Simon Sinek’s “Start with your why” (because I had a very interesting team building exercise focusing on a ‘why’ based on Symbiotic Culture in the work place, and I want to implement that in my own space and recreate my own Energy Environment . The sky is crying out side as the island rain patters on the sliding doors, and you can see that this is true with the below picture…

One of the definitions of the word environment, via uncle Google of course is as follows:
‘the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.’
The words ‘lives or operates.’ fits in clearly to my readings and my situation and the part of my path that I am on at this moment in time. I had a new space that I was going to live in and I was determined to set up the environment to make myself more energy efficient, more creative, to avoid constant old cues that were giving me an energy deficit. I was determined to use the research I had done over the years regarding habit formation and budgeting energy in order to create and environment that I could ‘operate’ more optimally. My intention was synonymous to the quote “If you want to change the world, First change yourself”, I was going to change my world by changing my home and allow the ripple effect to take place.

And it worked.
My guitars are set up on a carpet with my loop pedals and I have a few videos in the pipeline as well as some ideas to write some songs. I have an area where I can make more ‘Home-tender’ or ‘bartender from home’ content, which I also really enjoy. I have a neat kitchen which makes me want to cook and improve my eating habits. I have a sleeper couch with a peaceful view where I can read and rest. I have a desk in the middle of all of this where I can write, think and plan and last but not least a small bluetooth speaker which perfectly fulls the surrounding air with some quality music at a perfect level. All of the above mentioned are helping me to execute in my world, in my environment which translates over to the other parts of my life.
It is beautiful to hear people say that they can notice change in my energy, change in my color (skin and aura). I thank them and mention that I am grateful for the comment because I have been working on it and am proud of the progress. I am going to Energy Gym and my diet is these writings and research and just like an effective push up in the gym, I am relearning the right form in which to budget my energy and progress on this path of discovery, learning and achievement.
A seed cannot grow in an unconducive environment. We should not plant seeds of energy and progress in soil that does not have the right nutrients to grow in. It is a waste of seeds, a waste of an idea and a waste of energy. At the same time, do not expect the soil to magically change in order to suit your needs and better your results, you need to find new soil, create your new and conducive environment and a symbiotic culture that defines each and every day in order to achieve what you set out too achieve.
P.S. also remember this beautiful quote, “Sometimes when you are in a dark place you think you have been buried when you have actually been planted.”
GoodB.Y.E. for now.
