Entry Level Candidates: How to ace your interview and land the job!

Entry Level Candidates: How to ace your interview and land the job!

I’m certain that in my time recruiting at Phaidon International I have seen everything that can go right and wrong in an interview (sometimes they can go very, very wrong!)

The interview is your opportunity to make an unforgettable impression on the business you are meeting and to also find out everything you need to know about the opportunity. These points might seem obvious, but so many candidates don't do them. The below will help you make a positive impression at entry level which is important as most companies will be meeting with a lot of candidates!

Preparation:

Always be fully prepared – often it is the one thing that an otherwise very competent candidate is lacking. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

Some tips include:

  1. Ensure you arrive in plenty of time. Know how to get to the office from the subway. Aim to arrive at the reception 10-15 minutes before the interview is due to start. Punctuality is key. If you are going to have an issue call ahead ASAP.
  2. Know the full name and title of the individual(s) you are due to meet with.
  3. Find out as much as you can about the interviewer (Linked In, company website etc).
  4. Research as much as you can about the company.
  5. Know what your goals and objectives are for the future so that you can measure these against what is being offered.
  6. Prepare questions that are specific to that position and that company.
  7. Always be professionally dressed. Even in business casual
environments a business suit is required for the interview process. It is better to be overdressed than underdressed!
  8. Bring a pen and a note pad in case you want or need to make any notes.

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Do extend a firm handshake and address your interviewer by their name.
  • Remember to smile and present yourself in an energetic and professional manner at all times.
  • Don't speak negatively about past employers or peers.
  • Always maintain eye contact.
  • Ask questions that are pertinent to the position and company.
  • Point out areas that are a match between your skills and the requirements of the position.
  • Be prepared to discuss ways in which you have excelled or situations where you have demonstrated your initiative and ability to be proactive.
  • Be enthusiastic and positive.
  • Do not be rude to the interviewer and do not swear! Always answer with a complete sentence. No “yes” or “no” answers.
  • Try to build a rapport with the interview.
  • Never smoke before an interview or chew gum in an interview.
  • Don't say you aren't interested in the position - the interview is the wrong time to share that!

Simple points that should mean you leave a positive impression on interviewers that you meet.

Good Luck! :)

I would add a cautionary note. A firm handshake may not always be appropriate. If the interviewer is a Muslim woman, she may not wish to shake the hand of a male candidate. Therefore a certain amount of sensitivity may be required.

Cara Myers, great write up. Good, simple, common sense tips that often get over looked. These work for new job seekers and are good reminders for anyone that hasn't gone through the process in a while. Also good point on the phone, Susan Gushlaw.
