Entropy vs Evolution

Left to itself, things fall apart.

This simple truth explains hundreds of everyday phenomena:

1. The state of every universe in every galaxy

2. Human Relationships

3. Corporate Performance

4. The lack of empathy between communities

5. The mediocrity of social media content

6. Inequality and Discrimination - in income, education, gender, politics

...is a long list.

?

Question is: What’s keeping the world from falling apart?

Entropy - the inherent tendency of things to fall apart - is a scientific fact, hardwired into matter.

However, Nature seems to have been designed to resist Entropy.

?

For all its external appearance of chaos, Nature is inherently about regularity, symmetry…order.

?

The most powerful manifestation of nature is Life.

?

Life evolves.

?

The very definition of evolution is a defiance of disorder, an unbroken journey towards greater complexity.

?

This is conveyed in myths and pop-culture as the epic battle between the Good and the Bad, the Gods and Satan, The Batman and Joker.

?

The very purpose of Life, it seems, is to tame disorder.

?

?

Humans are a culmination of both matter and life, and hence agents of both entropy and evolution.

?

Unsurprisingly, therefore, we exhibit both disorder and order in our everyday life-choices.

?

Disorder – if you think of it, is always the easier choice.

?

Order, like all good things in life, is hard.

Nature is teeming with puzzles and the one which is most counter-intuitive is how almost everything worth doing is difficult to do (and everything that’s worthless - a piece of cake.)

?

With the right knowledge, someday, maybe we will figure out the reason behind this paradox and alter it in our favour.

?

Meantime, I hope we continue to have the courage and the wisdom and the persistence to keep choosing the difficult over the easy. The challenging over the mediocre.

Order over disorder.

?

Because if we don’t, things gathered, curated, and built over years and years of toil and dreams and hope…will fall apart.
