Entrepreneurship, with its allure of freedom, innovation, and limitless potential, often conceals a shadow that few discuss openly—the high risk of depression. Behind the scenes of success stories and triumphs, entrepreneurs often grapple with emotional challenges that stem from the unique pressures of their journey.
Understanding the Causes:
The path of entrepreneurship is paved with uncertainty, financial instability, and an unrelenting pressure to perform. The rollercoaster ride of wins and setbacks can take a toll on mental health. The isolation that comes with shouldering responsibilities and making tough decisions can amplify feelings of loneliness. The fear of failure, coupled with the relentless pursuit of success, creates an emotional cocktail that can lead to depression.
Facing the Darkness:
From coaching and mentoring some of the entrepreneurial leaders in my mastermind and business circle, I have seen first hand the pressure to maintain a facade of strength which often prevents entrepreneurs from seeking help or opening up about their struggles. Yet, acknowledging the emotional toll of entrepreneurship is the first step towards addressing it. Depression in the entrepreneurship or any context is not a sign of weakness, but a response to circumstances that demand immense resilience.
It’s a threat for everyone especially in volatile high risk African economies without safety nets for entrepreneurs. It’s therefore important for entrepreneurs to prioritise their well-being and recognise that there’s wisdom in safe guarding your mental health.
5 Strategies to Safeguard Your Mental Health:
1. Prioritise Self-Care
Treat yourself with the same diligence you put into your business. Prioritise sleep, exercise, and a balanced diet.
2. Cultivate a Support System
Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and loved ones who understand your journey and can provide an empathetic ear. (Consider joining supportive networks like the Ace Business Club for entrepreneurs and executives.)
3. Set Realistic Expectations
Embrace the unpredictable nature of entrepreneurship, understanding that not every day will be a triumph. Given enough time, all goals can be realised. Learn to give yourself grace and grounds to try again. In the end goals aren’t meant to cage you, but to stretch you.
4. Delegate and Seek Help
You don't have to do it all alone. Delegate tasks and seek professional advice when needed. “Don’t allow your small business or stage of growth make you small minded- invest the the right level of help for your next level.”

5. Mindfulness and Stress Management
Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and gratitude journaling can help manage stress and prevent it from escalating into depression. The Garden Gratitude Gala hosted at The Finery Ikoyi presented an experiential platform for leaders to learn the art of resilience tapping into gratitude reflection, deep breathing and meditation amongst other simple tools that were shared.
Entrepreneurship's emotional terrain is undoubtedly challenging, but by acknowledging the potential for depression and proactively taking steps to safeguard mental health, entrepreneurs can navigate their journey with resilience and strength.
Just as they shape their businesses, they can also shape a future that prioritizes their emotional well-being.
If you're struggling, remember that seeking professional help is not a sign of defeat but a powerful act of self-care. You're not alone, and there are resources available to support you on your entrepreneurial journey.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who was a part of the Garden Gratitude Gala. Your presence and energy made the evening not just an event, but a celebration of joy, resilience, and community spirit.
From the soulful melodies of EboniBand, KoyeSax, Frank Edwards, and Dare Art Alade to the stirring spoken word performances by Winihin Jemide and IB Quake, the night was a symphony of artistic expression. We were thrilled to see the joy as three lucky guests won experiential trips to Bali and Morocco, adding an extra sparkle to our gathering.
Once again, thank you for being a vital part of this beautiful journey. We look forward to more shared moments of gratitude and celebration.
In the spirit of Gratitude, I will like to gift a free resource to you which is The Growth and Gratitude Workbook. CLICK HERE to download your copy for free.
The full gratitude newsletter will be ready by Friday - look out for it.
