Entrepreneurs - why failing is better than not trying
Being an entrepreneur is amazing, but it takes a level of determination. Because every entrepreneur will have had a setback or two while trying to achieve their dreams.
I got my business model wrong twice before getting it almost (we are always growing) right!
So when I first started my business I started my doing exactly what my last employed job was and as you can imagine it didn’t take me long to realise that wasn’t the thing I loved.
Then I change up the model and thought global impact, huge clients, large change programs to completely change the leadership strategy. And it was exciting at first, traveling all over the UK, Ireland and even South Africa! But after 2 years of travel, the tipping point came when in a full year I slept in my own bed 40 times.
I knew something had to change, so I slowly started finding clients closer to home, smaller clients, and not just looking at the leadership but the whole strategy of the business.
And each of these “failures” got me one step closer to the business I have now. They gave me the learning I needed to grow into the person I am now. But at the time they were tough, I had moments where I thought I might lose the business completely.
So what were my key lessons?
- Have a plan before you start - as much as I build strategies for clients - I was like a plumber with a leaky tap.
- Moving forward is better than standing still - I would never have gotten to the amazing business I have now with the other stepping stones on my journey.
- Failing gave me more hunger to succeed - If things were always plain sailing I would not have the drive and passion for my business. I would not be so passionate about helping others building the last strategies because I won’t have seen it pitfalls for myself.
- Failing made me a better entrepreneur - with each failure I learned a valuable lesson about myself and the world of business. Without each hurdle, I would not have grown and become ready to have the business I have now. - The journey is as important as the end goal.
So when something doesn’t go to plan or you don’t get the outcome you hoped you would - always ask what can I learn and how can I grow. With a growth mindset, nothing you do will ever be a failure it will always be a learning.
