Entrepreneurs With Focus Win

Entrepreneurs With Focus Win

An entrepreneur with a lack of focus is a frustrated entrepreneur. They wonder why they can't gain traction in their business. For entrepreneurs, focus is what helps them win. I coach business owners, and I've noticed that those with a lack of focus struggle to see the way ahead and know which changes to make in their business to move them forward.

Before we go further, what are some types of focus?

Developing a niche is a type of focus. This is where you are saying no to most of the market and choosing only to serve a select few. This helps an entrepreneur focus on whom to target in their messaging, who to network with, and who to hire in their business to serve their niche. If you are under a million dollars in revenue, you may only be able to handle 1 or 2 niches at a time.

Serving fewer clients is a type of focus. Choosing to serve 30 clients instead of 300 is a powerful way to run a business. It takes a huge amount of focus, because there are always people that will work with you. Businesses can always expand, but it's hard to make them grow in a healthy way. Healthy growth takes focus, and only working with those who can add to your business, instead of make you 'busy.'

Offering fewer services is a type of focus. Choosing to offer 6 key services instead of 15 will allow you to become an expert in your work and make more money. You can add more services as your business grows, but while small, it's easier for an entrepreneur to keep their hands around fewer offerings. As the entrepreneur learns which services are most valuable, they can drop some services while adding new ones.

How do entrepreneurs become UNfocused? They mistakenly believe that anyone who shows up at their door looking to hire them is going to help them grow. But that is not true. Focus means you will analyze that potential client and only serve them if they fit some predetermined model of a good client. Focused entrepreneurs choose their clients, and they don't let the clients choose them.

Maintaining Focus is Hard

Creating and maintaining focus is an extremely hard task for big picture entrepreneurs. They want to serve everyone, and that becomes their downfall. Keeping focus in your business is so counterintuitive to growing a business. If you want to grow, you believe you have to get more clients. But getting the right client is the key to healthy growth. And getting the right client means you will often turn down clients, or develop longer processes to bring on new clients.

So, getting the right client may feel slow or that you are even losing clients. And that just feels weird to an entrepreneur that wants to grow. Maintaining focus is so hard, but it is how you remain healthy. If you feel frustrated, lost, or confused as to the next steps to grow your business, consider how you may do less, do it slower, or do it with fewer people. Ask yourself, "what can I cut?" and see if you gain some traction in your growth. Entrepreneurs with focus win!
