Entrepreneurs as candidates are likely to be rejected, but they shouldn't be...

I am sure you noticed over the years, it's much harder to help your friends who are entrepreneurs get jobs.

The typical Hiring Manager concerns may include:

  • "Entrepreneurs" may not be able to work a typical 8-5 job.
  • Entrepreneurs may not take orders without somehow having a way to do it better or their own way - and changing things at a large company may not be possible, so easily.
  • Employers are worried Entrepreneurs may be always doing a side hustle.
  • Possibly, Entrepreneurs maybe always looking to leave and even open up a business after learning everything...

We, Entrepreneurs, are a different type of person- and because of that, its a bit harder to hire us and we are a bit more uncomfortable sometimes even being a hired "employee".

We think differently. We make others a bit worried because of our unconventional thinking - And that can be ok - and extremely valuable, given the right circumstance.

You may be an entrepreneur, and you may be looking for a job, but if you are applying, maybe reconsider applying and put more time and focus into opening up your own organization. An entrepreneur has a fire and passion like no other and sometimes, its best to keep stay in that entrepreneurial lane.

For some hiring managers, it is quite hard to hire the ones who have entrepreneurial stints on their resume, so my suggestion to entrepreneurs who are applying is try to see if there is way to put a real title and role on the resume based on responsibilities versus just writing in Co-Founder, if an entrepreneur is applying to a job.

An entrepreneur is someone who is looking to take their passion and skill and bring about some type of solution that truly helps others. Many will want to join the entrepreneur, and that is what creates a company.

To all those that opened a recruiting agency or some type of company, Cheers! It is not easy. And to all those that support other Entrepreneurs, Cheers to you - as you are able to see someone's true passion and run with it alongside them - and that is most definitely special; Without you, the entrepreneur could not succeed.

And to all those Entrepreneurs that are applying to jobs: Just think about how your resume can look more "employee" like and bit less "entrepreneur" and it may help in the job search. One Tip: If at your (self employed) company you had one major client or a few, make sure to list the name(s) of the client and the responsibilities you held for those clients. Those years could equate almost to that of a contract type role in the eyes of HR/Hiring Managers, and look like you were essentially working with corporate america (as if you never left), looking a bit better than a typical self employed role on a resume.

And to all the Hiring Managers out there...here are some reasons why Entrepreneurs are wonderful candidates to hire:

  • They usually had to be a jack of all trades, and figure out everything on the go
  • The tech savvy entrepreneurs loves finding ways to things quick, fast and efficiently, sometimes becoming automation experts
  • They find ways to push through and create solutions that knock down barriers
  • They are used to challenges, no, issues and setback and trying to push through it
  • They understand the big picture, the vision and then can execute
  • They are usually great at valuing relationships
  • They usually bring a lot of passion to work if they are working in something they love
  • They will think creatively and out of the box and will jump into other boxes until they create a new box entirely for a solution to be born out of. :)

If that is not enough reasons...

I will try to find more.

Random question- I had a client reject a candidate because she had too many communities/organizations listed on her profile. It kind of made me sad because the role consisted of in person networking- so it's like two birds in one stone. Wouldn't this be the same sentiment? The entrepreneur for thinking different, outside the box- not being able to land a job because the hiring manager thinks they won't be able to dedicate to the job. Ok rant over :)
