Entrepreneurial spirit – what is it?

There are so many entrepreneurs out there that perhaps you have passed by in the street and don’t know they possess those amazing qualities that define them. Just because they don’t look like Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Anthony Robbins, Brené Brown or Oprah Winfrey doesn’t mean to say that they don’t have entrepreneurial qualities.

All successful entrepreneurs have number of traits in common. Many of these traits are also found in Leadership and Management within organisations.

In this article I have identified a number of those key traits that makes them stand out from others.

Motivation

Having a positive mindset is key to success, as is the ability to be self-motivated even in the face of adversity. When faced with obstacles they view these as challenges and are able to find ways around the issue to achieve success. When knocked back they reflect and learn from the experience and start over again with a positive mindset and keep going until they achieve what they set out to do.

Successful entrepreneurs are also able to motivate others to achieve their goals and desires. They provide positive motivational feedback and encouragement and are keen to see others succeed.

Creativity

Entrepreneurs are extremely creative and are able to think outside the box. They are always looking to improve themselves and others. If working for an entrepreneur they would expect their employees to come up with new and better ways of doing things.

Persuasiveness

They are able to negotiate well due to their ability to persuade others that their idea or viewpoint is right, using the best possible option, and are great at getting others on board. Some might say that Entrepreneurs are charismatic and are able to turn on the charm and charisma to persuade others that their way of thinking is right.

Vision

Successful entrepreneurs have the ability to see the big picture which enables them to come up with strategic plans. A visionary is able to foresee opportunities even in times of crisis. They have a vision and are able to act quickly put a strategy, plan or project into action.

Versatility & Flexibility

They have the versatility and flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and solve problems as they arise. Many business owners start off as the ‘Jack of all trades’ using all their skills to achieve a task or project in optimum time in order to meet the needs of the situation. They are receptive to other people’s needs, opinions and ideas and are open minded.

Risk tolerance

They have a tendency to be high risk takers and sometimes risk adverse, especially when they have a vision they want to pursue and have a strong determination to succeed.

Decisiveness

Entrepreneurs are usually decisive, especially when under pressure. They have sound judgement and don’t procrastinate. Failure to be decisive would lead to loss of opportunities, business, sales etc.

Collaboration

Entrepreneurs are not only brilliant leaders, but also great collaborators. The possess great Leadership and Management skills. They are good at bringing people and teams together to achieve the vision and goals. They rely on the skills and experience of others and are good at seeking out the right people with the right skills for a particular project or to ensure the organisation succeeds. They don’t have all the answers and therefore surround themselves with excellent people who can deliver their vision.

Ultimately, using entrepreneurial skills at work entails adjusting to other people’s work styles, avoiding office politics, celebrating your peers’ successes, meeting your deadlines, and putting your company’s goals first.
